There has been some excellent coverage on TV here, with Channel Four running an hour by hour timeline commentary on their website D Day as it happens Chap pictured in OP's post (I think; first through the wire at Omaha?) was shown running up the beach and throwing himself down as he did all those years ago My father was in a hospital on the south coast recovering from amputation due to wounds received over a year before in North Africa, and was wheeled out to see the troops but was promptly ordered wheeled back again because the sight of him and other patients may have had an effect on the morale of the embarking troops.

S! seems both adequate and inadequate at the same time. I think of what those guys went through, what was done to them and what they had to do, and all the words of gratitude I can think of just don't seem to be capable of conveying the degree of thanks everyone alive today owes them.
Sometimes I think the veterans of the landings in the Pacific get shortchanged because they were fighting in the "secondary" theater of the war and their landings were of much smaller scope. Few people (including myself) who didn't serve in the Marines or aren't WW2 buffs know the dates of the numerous landings in the Pacific. I need tovworkcon remedying that for myself.
One question I've pondered for the longest time is why none of those D-day landing craft mounted twin .50s or a 20mm Oerlikon. So many of those men would still be alive today if even 25% of the German machine gunners had their heads down due to .50 bullets and 20mm shells impacting around or in the bunker slits.

The ones in the ETO also had front opening gates (a bad idea really). I would chalk it up to differences between the services and logistical issues.

Deserves a repeat.
