In 2005, an 83 year-old World War II pilot is surprised to see 16mm footage of his 1944 Spitfire crash for the first time.

Looks like this will only be up on youtube until June, 5.

Great find, very moving and enjoyable to watch.

Those guys had great courage to fly over as far as Berlin in an unarmed Spitfire.

Thanks for posting Colt. cheers cheers

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

That was terrific. I've always been fascinated by photo recon units. I have a great book about the 8th Air Force's 7th photo recon group, that he belonged to. "Eyes Of The Eighth." Three squadrons of F-5's (P-38's) and one with Spitfire Mk XI's.
Funny thing is, the book makes no mention of the fact that Blyth caught his radio wire on that lever and locked the wheels down. It simply states that his gear wouldn't come down and that this was "a very unusual thing with a very reliable aircraft..." It went on to say that the engineering officers and mechanics all got on the radio to him with various ideas on what the problem might be. As he says, he finally had to belly in because of low fuel.
Maybe that film is the first time he's ever admitted that to anybody! Good find. Loved that.

That was AWESOME! What's really amazing is his recall so many years later. Places, names, people, dates... Even atmospheric conditions. Amazing. I have trouble remembering the names of a lot of the guys I served with, but I have always been really bad with names. This guys mind is like an iron trap... And his balls are made of brass.

Thanks for sharing!
