You can by earning currency; complete the training is the best start to amassing some dosh. Then maybe some missions to advance your rank and unlock more potent planes.

You can get a 109 right away...but it will cost you Golden Eagles which is real cash. OR you can grind to get a 109 for free by playing the game and getting to a high enough level for the Germans to purchase it with Silver Lions. Confusing right?

I simply want to buy an aircraft of my choice that is in game, buy it, and fly it.. if they don't allow myself, and others for that matter to do that they are loosing revenue... if they think that's a good business model they need their heads examined. The fact that I can't do that means they 'Gajin' are loosing out, not me. I totally agree, I haven't bought a single aircraft. Their business model left me cold. I was very interested in the sim until it showed up with mostly biplanes, all the single missions locked, and Lions, XP's .... WTF. If they had offered along with an early model hurricane, an early model 109, P51, Lagg, and opened a few single missions, I would have spent some time flying offline, building some experience, probably bought aircraft, and joined a few online missions. I think they missed the boat on drawing more customers long enough to stay.

That was my beef with it too. I really would rather just be able to buy what I want to fly and fly it. Even if it takes a while to release it. Their business model seems to be more geared toward the gamer mentality. For the product to be taken seriously by the flight sim community that will have to change IMo.

Think you are right Bearcat... They just want gamers as opposed to 'simmers' The title has so much potential but it seems the devs are committed to make us pay for what amounts to 'power ups' in order to make our aircraft 'fly right' lol! I've tried hard to get into it but it has such a ridiculous system that I just can't take it seriously as a flight sim, which is a shame. because it is gorgeous graphically! The same could be said for the previous title WoP, and I was so hoping that the devs had learned that serious flight sim enthusiasts would flock to their product if they made major improvements, but alas it's pretty much the same. Having said that I initialy enjoyed it for the graphics and a chance to just jump in and play, but that wears off when you realise there isn't much thought or depth to a lot of it's missions or campaigns..

It's predecessor could have been a real contender .. but again .. they were short sighted.. Perhaps they will change that .. Remember how RoF was when it was first released by NEOQB I think it was?

I have thrown some cash at it, and while it takes a while to get to rank 7 for example, up to rank 6 in any given airforce is not that hard. You can opt to double the experience with a premium account, and with some golden eagles gaining rank is quite quick as well, even if you're as bad as I am in actually getting kills.
It's true, the whole setup is different then any other flightsim around. It's just a matter of getting used to it. When I want easy experience and Lions I jump into arcade, when I have time I join FRB. I must admit that I haven't had as much fun with this sim in years.. ( And I go back to the ZX81 / ZX Spectrum for my first flightsim.. )
Some planes Like the -51 require quite a high rank, others, like a Spit, FW190D-14 can be bought. This is the way to go and When we eventually get to a full release and I can Fly a Persistent War in FRB, I will be Overjoyed. It has come a Long ways already since Alpha !

This has to be one of the "quickest" games in regards to unlocks. Took me about 4 days to get the 109 line. A feat in other games which would take me a few weeks. The model they are using is the flavor of the year (or past few years rather) so they assume most gamers are familiar with it. Its essentially a free game, so IF you want to fly a certain type of plane immediately, you most likely can. It will cost you I dunno, 8-15 dollars... but think of that as "buying" the game in the first place.
Im happy to see this model for a game like this. What this allows is a continuous stream of content and advancement for years. Not just a game released, a few updates, then nothing.
To unlock "quickly" and "free" Id recommend launching in your biplanes, going commando, then launching them again, and again, and again. Sure you get more xp/money (if you kill/objective a lot) BUT the biplanes will save you repair costs and I find the games go by quicker.
Doing this will you will gain: lions - in game soft currency (for buying planes, upgrades and repairing) Nationality XP - Will unlock higher "tier" planes General XP - You can convert this with eagles (hard currency) to increase any nationality level
... I cant recall exactly how you get crew xp. I think thats based off your xp gained.
