I'm reading Ed Macy's "Apache" about the RAF flying in Afghanistan. He mentions that US Apaches don't use the Longbow radar in Afghanistan because there aren't armored vehicles and it allows US helos to carry more weapons (the RAF use an up-engined Apache which allows them to carry both). So if I got an AH-64D kit (I'm looking at Hasegawa's 1/48), would I just leave the radar off the top of the mast? Would there be any other changes? Any Apache experts out there? smile

I would think so.... I would be suprised if not an option - radar. Not all of those models are fitted with them anyways last time I checked. But why on earth would the UK ones bother with the radar still installed........totally useless. Just greater cost if lost + more weight.

Useful for their Air to Air Mode (deconflicting with other helo's and Fast Air) and also useful for finding ground convoys (friendly) and the odd Taliban 4WD that they'll use for transport/ motorcycle scouts etc

IIRC I spotted at least a couple of IDF/AF AH-64D 'Seraf's flying without radar last time I was i Tel-Aviv.

There's also a terrain mode for low vis flying, I think.

It freaks me out when I think about how big the universe is.
Just so big and growing bigger, exploding outward constantly in all directions,
so no, I don't care how fast I was going, officer.

I don't recall seeing any longbow radar domes on the apaches while I was in Afghanistan.

Oops-sorry any British friends. I should have known it was not the RAF - I'm reading the book! I will blame it on the raging headcold I have right now smile I will try and make it up to the British by highly recommending Macy's book.

Maybe I will order the Hasegawa AH-64D and leave the longbow radar dome off.

If you enjoy Ed's book, look for "Dressed to Kill" by Charlotte Mason (I think that's her name).

She was the first female british Apache pilot to see active service and was part of Ed Macy's team.

It's interesting reading about the same events from a totally different perspective (and gender!).

I re-read both of them regularly ....

Cheers,

Andy
