By that I mean either you have a Medicare Card, or are 'close' to having one!

I fooled with this game a lot, a few years ago...lost interest...came back 'less than seriously', but would like to find somebody to mess with, On-Line ...TCP/IP mode.

Yeah, I know there are Web-Sites for that, but...to be honest, they are full of guys that are GOOD, fast, and more 'serious'...besides, 'We' have 'time' at different times of the day.

God Bless and Keep you Younger Folks [Were I able to be amongst you again...].

Yo Chief!

Long time no see. Nothing but fond memories of our correspondence. I just qualified for my AARP card, so I guess I am a Geezer.

Unfortunately I am a geezer with an 18 month old son..so my flying time is quite limited. Still wouldn't mind catching up with you sometime, and maybe getting a quick hop in. One of my motivations for getting so into Mission Builders in various sims is to write fun missions I can actually succeed at \:\)

Hey..Hi, Bob ! Yeah, ashamed to say I 'bowed out' a while ago, gave the Games and the Cougar to a 'local'...who ultimately gave BACK the Game. I didn't do anything with it, but this past Fall finally managed to 'cobble together' a Broadband Cable internet access. I knew a fella in FL and we learned TCP/IP together, but HE lost interest. We're 'basic'...simple 'sticks and home-brewed missions...L/L comm's. Neither of us knew how to do the Voice Internet jazz, IF it worked on TCP/IP. Flew a few formation missions and then a few A to A, but VERY easy and relaxed, in my Late Mornings... [a time of 'slack' for both of us in the Winters]

Oh. MY. AARP AND a toddler ? That'll keep you young !

Thanks for the nod, Old Boy

Hey, Chief! Long time no post. (although I thought that new user might be you...)

I fall into your cateogry of Younger Folks, but maybe on Saturday evenings you can find a flight on Hyperlobby that is early enough to suit your tastes?

Some "geezing" going on, along with young care-givers, Saturday evenings on HyperLobby. :-) Two or three squadrons still quite active and meeting up there.

Joe and Gene... thanks. Yup, Joe, I learned a lot down on the Hardware Forum, as 'cabling' brought on the other things I talked of there.

As for Hyper-Lobby, from our 'reading' postings related to it, neither me or my Old Pal felt we wanted to dive in there. A slower bell needs to be rung up. Coupla years ago I tried WW2F On-Web... OHhhh...Myyy.... And [maybe this is an excuse] neither of us was geared up for those 'talking over the Net' set-ups.

Well, I'd advise you to not hesitate over either Hyperlobby or voice comms. Especially if you are feeling as if its best to kind of dip a toe in rather than jump off the deep in. Here's why.

I hesitated with Hyperlobby a while ago for some reason, but found it simlpe to set up - really simple. More importantly, you are with friends, if anyone has shown up in the lobby of Jane's. Just a few guys - not a swarm - and the past few months, very helpful easy going guys who can answer typed questions if you want...and no need to fly unless you want to. And the helpful pilots are usually happy to go up on a flight just for orientation and so forth. In other words, no pressure at all, just friends still loyal to a great sim!

Voice comms - incredibly good thing, easy to set up, free, and I would not imagine you would ever want to fly with a friend, without them. Again, there is no "crowd" or anything to contend with. If you choose to join another person to talk or fly, that's private. You just enter their IP address. You know a headset mic costs a huge $12 or so at WalMart or wherever.

Did I mention free? I'm still amazed that you can be enjoying a flight with a pilot in Australia and one in Croatia, talking back and forth almost as if you are in the same room - for a couple of hours...free. Simply amazing, and pretty much taken for granted now.

Ventrilo, Team Speak and Roger Wilco are the main little programs I'm familiar with people using. Several of the squadron sites like CVW-11 or the 323rd have links to dl them, I believe.

Good luck!

Thank you all... good info, and well meant. I'll leave this herring in the water for a while. Maybe get a strike! If not maybe I'll screw up my courage. A lot of this 'Puter stuff that is Second Nature to you, Gene, has to be 'learned', and unless you want to re-invent the wheel, it helps to have someone show you how. I will admit that now that I have cable, 'All Things Are Possible'... as long as I can keep the water out of my splices...

Happy Ought Six, around.

I never messed with IL2. Once I mooched a copy of it and found my Old Rig here wouldn't run it. But when I ran WW2F, and/or did it On-Line at a guy's place in town who had fast ISP, I found seat-of-the-pants 'dog fighting' beyond my personal ability...depth perception wise. [Same for 'driving' games] My WW2F CD lays in the bottom drawer; lovely to look at, bummer to fight. That F/A-18 A to A finds you using the electronic tools makes it possible, to me. I created a simple mission where I was literally flying along in a straight line. My Pal joined the Mission and we flew together for a while, then he zoomed off into the distance as I did a 180. THEN, we 'joined' ! It was fun.

36-1/2 yr old "geezer" here. Ditto Recluse. My 4 kids keep me away from this sim as much as possible unfortunately. I have to trade sleep for sim flying as much as possible.

Yep, I know folks like Ventrillo and I used to SWEAR by Roger Wilco, but now I am a convert to TEAMSPEAK, mainly due to the availability of many public servers. (I guess there are Ventrillo servers too..) When I set up my new router, I forgot to forward ports for Teamspeak, and guess what? It worked perfectly fine! I guess having the comms go through the server means ports are always opening OUTBOUND before they need to open INBOUND so the router allows the traffic as opposed to hosting a server on one machine (like RW).

Anyway, didn't mean to get technical... Get a mike, fire up TS2, connect to a server and things just work!

I am no expert here but, if you are using a stateful firewall, it sees the traffic initiate from the inside (your pc) and allows return traffic (from the server) to pass. If it was just a plain old packet filtering firewall, you would have to make static entries in the firewall before the traffic would be allowed to pass. Further more, those ports would remain open, even if the application was not in use.

Hi Cheif,

Most of us that fly JF18 online in the lobby are friends and I'm not to sure how serious most of us take the sim but I'm always about the fun, even when I get shot down. It's a chance to improve one's skills.

Hope to see you in the Lobby soon for some good times.

Yep, my router (and most common ones) are using SPI firewalls, so Outbound ports opened allow return traffic. I thought that the ports remained open all the time, hence I use ZoneAlarm as well on my PC, but recently I did SHIELDS UP! scan and saw that though with ZONE ALARM the ports were STEALTHed, even without ZONE ALARM, the ports reported CLOSED. I guess an app needs to open a LISTEN PORT before the router can pass traffic to it.

Sorry for the tech digression!!

Recluse,

I use a DSL modem so I have to go into the modem options and disable the firewall manually to allow a pass-through to my pc. I keep it up all the time unless I'm going to host something.

Heh, yeah... I'm sure the developers like them much better too! Of course, you look at console gaming forums and they are all about networking the various console boxes, so in this regard, the consoles might even be more trouble...

Gotcha - the truth comes out. It's not your son that's keeping you from JF-18, it's an evil console. \:\)
