Well, I took my 14 year old daughter out today for her first time driving. Sweet fancy Moses. Now I know why the driver ed teachers were always pissed off stressed out drinkers.

Wow.

I had a nice Mustang, 4 speed, fast.
She was 15 years old, and I kept telling her "Push the clutch in FIRST"...but it never caught on.
When it starts, let go of the key!...nope.
I changed the clutch, and pressure plate. The teeth on the flywheel were gone.
Bought her an automatic, as soon as she was sixteen.

Went through 2 cars, and finally left home to live with her girlfriend at 18.
She's been married for 20 years, never wrecked another car, since the two I bought her.
Still drives too fast, but she's good wink

A fathers fate.

Grin and bear it.
She'll be gone all too soon..... wink

I know hardly anyone these days who drives a stick and drive it smoothly.

Most everyone I know, including my wife, are on autos. Pussies smile

I miss the good old days when you have to learn to drive stick at drivers ed or you do not pass, period.

I just love 'DRIVING' the car. If it's a real car.

If you're not controlling the clutch and gears, you're not 'driving' the car.
Ahhhhh....my days are gone.... rolleyes

I'm dust..... wink be gentle.

I have a Stealth, looks and runs like new. It's 'fast enough'.
What I really wanted, was a Viper, but they were over 50 G's.
If I had the money, I'd own a Viper now.
Too late....inflation has taken me down.
I could get a nice Viper for about 30 G's now.
Just too late, and too much, for a toy.

The upkeep would kill me.

I find it amazing that in the US a 14 year old is allowed to get behind the wheel.

A car is not a toy. A mistake and people could easily die.

In my opinion no 14 Y/O has the maturity to be given such responsibility.

Only adults should be allowed behind the wheel.

That attitude wouldn't go very far in farm country. Parents are putting their kids behind the wheels of farm tractors and farm trucks as young as 9. Most family farms wouldn't make it without the benefit of their cheap (free wink ) labor. I know I was driving the vehicles on our farm by 9 but it might have actually been sooner.

The "Underage Driving for Farm Reasons & Laws" for using the public roads have been tightened but the age to get the permits used to be lower.

Oh, how glad I am that you have to be 18 to get a driver's license in Sweden.

This just reminded me of my instructor. I think he was bored with me that most of the time he was sharing stories about his other students.

A female student of his was driving fast in wet conditions. Instead of directly reprimanding her, he ended up saying something like, "I'm old, I'm quite satisfied with what I've achieved in life, I'm ready to die. Are you?"

The first time I was behind the wheel was in a large, empty parking lot, 14 years old, pouring rain. It was a 5-speed pick-up.

It scared the life out of me eek2 and I didn't get my license till I was 17.

My first car? That dang 5-speed thumbsup

You can start learning on private property anytime your parents deem it fit.

As far as driving on public roads, that varies from state to state.

In the state of Virginia, you have to be 15 years, 6 months to get a learner's permit - that allows you to drive a vehicle as long as an adult is in the passenger seat.

You need to be 16 years, 3 months to be eligible for a full driver's license.

Additional requirements from the VA department of motor vehicles website:

Quote:
If you are under age 19, you must provide proof of successful completion of a state-approved driver education program and hold a learner's permit at least nine months before you can receive a driver's license.

If you are under age 18, you must provide a driver education completion certificate or show proof of your successful completion of a state-approved driver education program. The driver education certificate of completion is considered part of the driver's license application. Your parent, guardian or foster parent must list his or her driver's license or state-issued identification card number and sign the certificate to certify that you have driven at least 45 hours,15 of which occurred after sunset, and that the statements made and the information submitted on the certificate are true and correct. Certifying false statements can result in prosecution.

I'm pretty sure you can get some sort of pilot license at a younger age than you can get a learner's permit for driving on public roads. That being said, I think most 16 year olds aren't mature enough to drive - and it seems a lot of people in their 20s, 30s, etc, aren't either.

If I can afford it, when my kid is driving age he won't just be completing the standard driver's education courses to get his license. I'm going to be signing him up for performance and/or defensive driving classes so he gets a full understanding of what a car can and cannot do.

It took me a long time to come to that understanding myself. I learned to drive at 16, but if I'm honest it was a good 6 to 8 years before I was mature and experienced enough to really drive responsibly.

The AWD In that stealth is better for those Michigan roads anyway wink

Love that saying to, we all learned this way back in the day. Was not until I was 23 that I finally stopped killing
my rides. Figured out they last longer when you don`t beat on them. And the 2 accidents and 1 speeding ticket along
the way sure helped in that education. Insurance is expensive at that age.

I think I was 14 the first time I got behind the wheel. My dad took me to the local dump, now they are called landfills...LOL. It was a green 1966 Plymouth Fury III. He said to step on the gas, so I did, after raising my foot off the pedal and pushing back down hard. That was when I learned about the power of cars.

It looked like this one except it was just a dark green. I wish I still had that car. It was my fathers.

Back when cars had GOOD names! Charger, Challenger, Demon, Barracuda, etc. Yeah, the Charger is back, and we've never lost the Mustang or the car named after a small warship (Corvette), but almost every other car has a name that's either outright feminine or neutral at best. Elantra, Altima, Avalon - why not just bring out the Puff, Pamper, Exfolia, and Dayspa?
