Fascinating photo here. All I can say is that I'm glad I wasn't an adult during the 70's. Just look at that hair. http://www.retronaut.com/2012/10/microsoft-staff-photo-december-7th-1978/

And those amazing facial hair styles ! Guy on the top left may have the most ridiculous haircut on the picture, but the awesome sideburns steal the show. I long for that time when real men wore facial hair and hats. Bring back the connecting mutton chops and bowler hats ! Cheers Nico

Take a look at the before and after photos... What strikes me is that in the before photo, they look more like individuals, and in the after photo they are all looking more or less like clones. Maybe it's a sign o' the times?
I think that's simply the result of being older and being in the business world for so long. I don't think it's due to any universal social trend.

I was 18 in 1978. I had the hair, and God forgive me, the clothes too.

I have an uncle who worked for MS a little later, in the early 80s I think. I believe he wrote a fax program for the original Windows. He had that hair and style too, and now he still has the hair just not the facial hair. He still wears a fairly long pony tail and lives in Seattle, but he can do what he wants since he's worked for IBM, MS, AOL (Rhapsody was his baby), and is now one of the lead IT at Amazon.com. I really should go visit him some day.
