And that is exactly what I feared they would find.
No matter how well it was packed,60 years buried underground is going to take its toll.

I hope I am proved wrong with subsequent discoveries but I don't think so nope

Sounds like it's going to be like that car they dug up last year after several decades. It was buried in pristine condition but it was a total mess when they dug it up.

On the other hand it means the crates haven't collapsed (at least one of them).
So that's something I guess, but I wouldn't hope for too much for the rest of them either.

Btw wheels, that car was in a time capsule wasn't it?

Considering which state some of todays restauration projects were in when they started, I wouldn't give up hope yet. As stated, the crate(s) is apparently still somewhat intact (ie. not crushed wink ), and the amount of corrosion is dependent upon any number of factors, ranging from the ph-value of the soil to wether the water has completly filled the crates (and if so, at what rate does the "crate-water" circulate). There is still a good chance that a flying Spit (or several) can come out of this, but it is not going to be the "Hey, let's dig up these and fasten the wings and start flying" the press so far might have made people believe. I say give it ten-fifteen years, and then we should know for certain biggrin

Many a successful aircraft restoration project began when remains were dredged from the mud.

This is consistent with my experiences in high profile projects. In the end, the level of press that the public desires puts pressure on politicians, informants, financiers, property owners, with most falling on the archaeologists to locate something which may or may not exist. In the end it keeps the archaeologists and geophysics crews from doing their jobs. Hopefully they will be able to return as there is likely some truth to this story and all they need is just a bit of luck.

I don't understand why they did it this way.

Instead of flying everyone out there on the basis that they would dig a hole and expect to find loads of Spitfires which is odds on to bring disappointment, surely they should have just done some quiet digs in the places where they are most confident then move the press etc out there if and when they get a result.

The way it's now gone, it seems everyone went out and gave up as soon as the first dig didn't produce anything wanting to protect their money. If I was investing I would have had my eyes wide open to the prospect that it may take a long time and a lot of holes to get the goods.

Exactly right. Most archaeological projects move through several phases. 1st is recon, second is survey, third is limited testing and last is full on recovery. Looks like they were pressured to go straight to recovery. I've done a Time Team dig before and I suspect the presence of a "documentary" team is similar TT digs where there is lots of pressure to produce and it is usually all contrived. They should have taken their time and managed the situation much better.
