So what are you guys using to drive these beasties? Can we plug in trackIR, joysticks, game controlers, etc??

Is there a single player side to this game?

No unfortunately there is no SP to this, it will be MP only with various game modes, currently just team deathmatch with base capping, but some more game modes are coming.

As far as controls, although in the olden days I used a joystick to play Mechwarrior 2, I found that the default controls with mouse and AWSD work really well, so that is what I am using.

The beta does have some joystick support, but I think there is little tweaking available and rudders and trackIR mentioned as things they hope to work on and support eventually, but I think they have a lot of other things to finish before that.

In the meantime the mouse + KB works amazingly well (feels very natural and very accurate aim), eventually when they have better support I plan to use mouse for torso and arms control and then X52 throttle and rudder pedals for mech movement control, and TrackIR for looking around cockpit hopefully.

I couldn't watch it. The music was so bad I had to turn it off. Wow.

Joystick / HOTAS support is currently pretty limited in the Beta. There is a joystick column in the Options, and it allows you to set keybinds and also axcis assignments. It can handle multiple controller devices. Currently, items frequently seen in flight sims, such as sliders for sensitivity / gain and check boxes for inverting joystick axis are not implemented. Many of those things can be addressed by editing certain .cfg and/or .xml files. Unfortunately, you'll probably need to dig through the Beta forums to find the settings you need/want, as they are not in there by default.

Rudder pedals can be used (I just started using them last Friday). Regardless of what controller you use, currently the leg turning is a digital (full left - off - full right) affair. While I currently have my stick setup as Y axis for torso pitch, and X axis for torso twist, I usually have my right hand on the mouse instead. Left hand on the throttle, and use the rudder pedals for leg turning.

The devs have indicated that better support for joysticks / HOTAS is on the agenda, but it way down the list. Supposedly that is partly due to keeping the testing / development simpler (as they won't need to worry about testing the more complete joystick control scheme with all of the various (usually weekly) patches that are being made.

TrackIR support is supposed to be coming, too. Propnut has indicated that he uses it now to good effect (probably using the generic mouse emulation). To what degree that TrackIR support will be implemented, remains to be seen. While MWO has cockpits that can be viewed via Freelook mode, they do not have the sort of functionality that we see in high grade combat air sims (ie. DCS series). Personally, I don't expect it to be a full 6 Degrees Of Freedom, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Yup, old school FTW wink

Also, as others are mentioning, I haven't even tried to get joystick working in the game yet, going to wait until they have fleshed out support for it. Although, I am actually quite happy with how mouse and Logitech G13 Gamepad is working for me.

That G13 looks pretty cool! Not sure if I've ever seen that one.
I used my TFlight HOTAS X in the game. It's fun except for targeting the guns. Just too awkward to get the shot lined up fast enough. I could get used to the throttle being backwards, but no reverse on there is a problem. I'd imagine that's one of the last things they work out in the game. Bigger fish to fry at this point.

There are lines you can edit into the user.cfg file for altering the throttle behavior. One line for inverting the axis, and another to change it from the default (0 to 100%) over to a -100% to +100% scheme. Search the Beta forums for my name and user.cfg and throttle and you'll probably find it pretty quick. (Not home at the moment, or else I would just paste them into here).

How did you get the HUD off, was it with the mech shut down?

To toggle the HUD on and off use RSHIFT + F11.

In the ammo cook off shot, I was shut down and had toggled the HUD off. I was going to take some screen caps of my death since I had overheated in front of a Hunchback who was carrying an AC20. During the shutdown cycle, I did not have line of sight on the Hunchback since I was staring at my feet. (LOL) Once I powered back up, the Hunchback was shutdown also!. My theory is, he over rode one too many times, because then, as I was snapping screens caps, he blew the hell up. I then turned my HUD back on, spun to the right, and promptly had my face blown off by a Gauss rifle wielding Centurion. DOH!

Ah great story, yeah the AC/20 is a serious heat generator, and I learned not to use the override more than once with it unless you want to self immolate...

Very nice shots I will have to try that RSHIFT + F11 trick, thanks!

The patcher doesn't show amount downloaded, so can't say for sure...

BTW, they have announced open beta next week (16th). So get in there guys!
