Hi there,

I'm tempted to get DCS A-10C ( I love that aircraft, and have been flying Flight Sims on and off since Microprose's F-19 Stealth Fighter ) and while looking it up and reading about it, I found out about DCS World and the free Su-25T that comes with it.

So I downloaded and installed it all to suss it out before I pay for A-10. I know there isn't a clickable cockpit etc., but it still gives me a sense of what DCS World might be like, and just how detailed it is compared to other types of Flight SIMs.

Anyhow, I watched the training videos, found the Flamming Cliffs manual, and did some of the 'instant action' options to try to get used to everything. So far, so ok, I can just about fire and destroy targets.

So I started the campaign for the Su-25T, and I can't get past the first mission! I keep getting hit by SAMs. Not Radar ones, I'm able to detect them and take them out after flying the SEAD instant action mission a few times. It's smaller, probably hand held, Infra Red SAMs that keep getting me. I don't know when they're fired, or from where ( as, if I understand it, they don't 'lock on' as such, so I get no warning ) they just suddenly hit me.

So, any advice or tips on how to survive?

Thanks...

J.

Never flown the SU-25T, and I don't know what systems are modeled in it. But do you get a missile launch warning?

Try to fly higher could be worth a shot. Try to pick of stuff at range, and don't overfly your target area in low/medium altitude.

Thanks for your reply...

I don't get a missile launch warning at all. I may be wrong ( pretty likely actually ) but I think in the Su-25T you only get a lock warning and missile launch warning for Radar missile, not for Infra Red missiles. So they kinda come out of the blue...

I could try flying higher alright, but I don't have a lot of ordinance I can fire at great range, in general I have to get at least within 10k for most of the air-ground stuff, I think...

Came to think of it, in the debrief you should be able to see what launched, when it launched, who launched it and when it hit you with a timestamp.

Like this:

Should give an idea of what your up against. When you have found out what hit you, go into the encyclopedia and look at stats and data. You now have a rough estimate of their engagement range. If possible, stay out of it salute

My very vague recollection is that it's indeed handheld Iglas (IR) that are being fired at you. The solution, if I remember rightly, is to stay high enough that you're out of their engagement envelope. You should be able to check the performance envelope in the encyclopedia.

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks for your replies!

Excellent suggestions, I'll use the debriefs to figure out what's happening to me and then use the encyclopedia to figure out how to avoid it. Thanks!

You have an IR jammer and a bunch of flares. Basically use the jammer and pop flares during the attack runs, then retreat back to high alt! Don't worry, you'll still die a lot. smile

Another option is to fight fire with fire...find those Igla carriers on the Shkval and Vikhr them flat! biggrin

Well, a quick look at the Encyclopedia shows that the Inglas and Streelas have a range of around 5km-10km depending. Unfortunately, the first campaign mission seems to have a cloud base of 2000m, so that doesn't give me a lot of room. I'll have to follow Jedi Master's suggestions, use the IR Jammer and flares a lot, and try to take them out before they take me out!
