I am referring to UFO Aftermath,Aftershock and Afterlight (all available on GoG)

I have the original X-Com games but they are showing their age now.

I see mixed reviews for the UFO series.I know they are not a true successor to the X-Com series but I'm hoping some of you guys can give me the dirty on them.

As long as you don't expect the world and they're cheap you should be OK. For reasons beyond my (limited) comprehension all of the UFO: Afterthrought games refuse to run on my PC, but that's a fluke.

At least it'll pass the time until the new XCOM and Xenonauts games arrive.

I own UFO afterlight (the latest one) and i have to say its rather a good game.

It has a lot of tech building, manufacturing, resource control.

I also like the way the game is designed for you to pick up and play and figure it out on the fly. The bits you don't understand at the start give you a disadvantage but become realised with time playing the game.

I don't understand the "as long as you don't expect the world" comment from the previous post, but that could be referring to the two previous titles.

The game has quite a lot of depth, is a long lasting campaign, and to me has replay value.

The combat is well done in a real time turn based way. You can slow time and pause time to help arrange your characters and terrain plays a big part in combat effectiveness. Continual day and night transitions with different environmental factors for both.

I have not played the previous versions but the last one is definitely worth it IMO

Thanks guys.

I just found this ... http://store.steampowered.com/app/37030/

Could be just what I am looking for. An updated X-Com title?

YES! It's great. I played through the whole game twice, it's very good.

Well I have checked out the video to xenonaughts and while it looks like fun and I know its in alpha but UFO afterlight seems to be miles ahead of it.

The combat system in xenonaughts is very antiquated as is the isometric view.

UFO afterlight has a full 3D environment which you can pan around. Even though its still turn based it is a continual real time motion. So no clicking end turn then waiting for the enemy to make their move. The enemies move in real time with you. Graphically UFO is miles ahaed and I am not sure xenonaughts characters can kneel and go prone, they certainly can in afterlight.

Seriously, if you like this genre, then you are missing out if you don't play afterlight.

If you would like, I can post some pics and a bit of a intro to afterlight.

Thanks for the offer Bogusheadbox but I have fairly well researched Afterlight with reviews/video's/etc.I more or less came to the same conclusion about Xenonaughts as you did.
Afterlight is on my list of things to buy but at the moment UFO: Extraterrestrials Gold has my attention somewhat.
