excellent watch, thanks for posting.

The tomcat is up there as one of the sexiest planes of all time, right next to the f-4 phantom

"excelled in several key performance areas, and in terms of operational readiness, proved to be a very maintainable aircraft" -- 3:08 on the first vid.

I wonder how it went from that to being "hard to maintain" later in it's life. I still can't accept that the Tomcat's been retired.

Ice- That line struck me as odd also but in context of 1977 it was relatively easy compared to F-4 despite having much more advanced systems. Starting in the mid '90s it became harder and harder for the Navy to justify budget for F-14 with Super Hornets in service and the main threat /rarionale for Phoenix missile going away with demise of Soviet Union.

Not to mention that carrier aircraft in particular take a beating, both in launches/traps as well as constant exposure to salt air. Over time, it's much easier to maintain an F-15 in Mountain Home, ID (or Osan, South Korea for that matter) than it is a Tomcat that spends 6 months at a time in the Persian Gulf.

There was a saying in the Navy that if a Tomcat wasn't leaking, it was out of fluids.

Interesting seeing the Ferris paint schemes on the Tomcats, especially the painted canopy underneath.

Anyone know which museum is pictured at the end of Part 1??! There's a VF-102 cockpit section AND a test Tomcat in the same room, wherever it is..

That is the Cradle of Aviation Air & Space Museum on Long Island.

The segments with Dave Kratz were shot at the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Long Island. Our Bethpage camerea crew and Dave set up at the museum and Dave responded to questions I posed to him via telephone. The other aviaors and engineers were taped in El Segundo and Redondo Beach, California. The historical ACEVAL / AIMVAL footage was from an old Grumman video.
