It's a HAWK, hung from an Iranian F14A, because Phoenix was near EOL and there was no prospect of building new missiles.

While not exactly the same, as the mission was changed from SAM to ARM, rather than SAM to AAM, the US fitted Standard to the F4 during Vietnam... it was an airframe sufficiently large for the required electronics and warhead, and with sufficient range...

The HAWK is considerably slower than Phoenix, and is only SARH rather than ARH with command updates. I'm not entirely convinced it represents a significant increase in capability over AIM-7 - except the Iranian AIM-7 are also very old models of limited performance and reliability compared to the latest generations of US missile.

It certainly "Looks" more like a high performance 'AIM-54-a-like', and that might be all that is important.

I've read suggestions that AIM-54 can 'recently' be upgraded/maintained/rebuilt/replaced, and that HAWK was not progressed as an AAM, but who knows with the Iranian 'bluster' what the truth of these claims is - they are after all stationing a blue water navy off the 12 mile zone of the continental US in response to the US presence near the Gulf...

You could easily compare HAWK missile, Phoenix missile and Kub missile, how they work and what kind of radar they used...

that's my info ........ kub = semi-homing and hawk - semi-homing too!
but phoenix use fully homing !!!! no semi!
f-14 could launch sparrow (semi-homing).... so one russian aircraft like su-27 also could launch R-27 ER or EM its(semi-homing)too
so could be armed kub on evry aircraft can launch semi-homing missile??? confused

i think my qouestion is confusing sleepy

As they didn't use it in that way, probably they had better AA missiles...
