Hey folks. Those of you who use and know Steam, I have a queation. I'm not exactly sure what "verify game cache" does, but sometimes I find that I have to use that in particular for Skyrim. Skyrim will up and out of nowhere get terrible frames. Usually after I verify game cache and restart the computer it fixes right up.

However, I just did that on Mafia II which I haven't played in awhile and now all of my accumulated save progress is gone. banghead

Did verifying game cache do this or is Steam doing something else funky? I also defrag game files from time to time thinking its important. Does defragging do it?

I'm upset that I lost all my saved games.(and I'd gotten far in the game too)

Thanks.

I have never de-fragged any of my Steam games so not sure if it makes any difference at all.
I see you use Win 7.Doesn't that have good disk keeping anyway?

As far as I am aware, verifying the game cache just checks for all the correct files and replaces them if any are missing or corrupt.
I wasn't aware that it erased any saves etc.

Crap. Looks like you have to rename a file to protect it. Man I've gotten lucky not loosing Skyrim saves. That would be a very upsetting prospect.

Thanks Chucky.

How many game saves do you have in Skyrim? My understanding is that you need to keep the number down on both console and pc. Mine would do that, then I cut back to about 20 from 100 and it solved the problem. Now I just delete when I see the list growing.

For the game saves, maybe the storage folder got deleted accidentally? Some store in your documents rather than the game's directory itself.

I just looked at that info again Coot.Does it only apply to Valve games?
I'm not sure exactly where Steam stores the saved games.
It might be a good idea to find out and back them up.

One question.I wonder when you do a Steam backup whether it also backs up any saves.

Coot: Did you disable Cloud storage for Steam? If you re-enable it you might recover your saves....

I'm not sure Bib4Tuna. I'm a bit confused about some of the stuff Steam is doing now. I'll look at that.

I see that my Skyrim saves are located in My Documents/My Games/Skyrim however I've never lost Skyrim saves doing either a defrag or check game cache.

I'm not sure where the Mafia saves are though. Maybe depending on where they are located they'll get deleted?
