Just found these two photos of Albatros D.V or D.Va cockpits with individual installations. I have marked and numbered all handles and gauges, and identified some of them. The rest was done by RAF_Louvert (over at Combat Ace) - thank you, Lou. And can anyone correctly identify, which the cockpits are, either D.V or D.Va?

Thank you guys! RAF_Louvert beat you only by half an hour, I guess. I have updated the Jpeg.

Is 12, 1 Button or 2, if 2 does that mean you could fire 1 gun at a time rather than always both ?

Yes, two buttons. You could fire the two 08/15 "Spandau" seperately.

The funny thing with the LMG 08/15 is:
It is an adoption of the British Maxim machine gun, which was invented by a man who was born in America.

Seems alot of things was copied back and forth but, ultimately it was the different arrangements that was key.
Funny is the Mercedes D.III was a liquid cooled engine yet, they worked tirelessly to adapt the Spandau to be air cooled. when they could have just used an extension from the aircrafts cooling system to cool the guns.
Slighly more pipes, slightly greater risk. maybe slightly more weight, but no doubt more effective cooling and maybe even possible to increase rate of fire later on.

The whole water cooling systems for two machine guns incl. the water would surely weigh several kilogramm more - at least 20 kg I'd guess; rather more. The Albatros was quite heavy already; while the engine power was still not too big. So they had to think about each kilogram. And they wanted to carry rather a maximum weight of ammunition. While early British and French planes seemed to carry only 500 round (for a single machine gun), the German fighters carried 1.000 rounds; the same amount for each of their twin guns. The more devastating firepower must have been a decisive advantage. I guess the Entente pilots hit the German planes similarly often as the Germans hit the Entente's. But when a short hit is much more devastating (twin guns plus higher rate of fire), you could put enemy aircraft out of action with a single burst more often.

Yea 20kg no doubt, Spandau was already looking into lightweight version for the infantryman, so why think differently when fitting to aircraft. Takes bold people to take a different route from what already works. and opening up 2 lines of research on 1 piece of equipment isn't really viable in wartime.
It is a very interesting theory thou. I wonder how much addition liquid would have been needed in the engine cooling reservior really, if the guns was plummed into the engine cooling system. most of all i wonder if they actually did test a system of this type.

You guys are overlooking that synchronized machine guns were first installed on rotary engined fighters--i.e., air-cooled--not the liquid-cooled Albatros, which came later. Hence, the air-cooled development of the Maxim.

Damn, that's spot on, JFM - that must have been the main reason.

Yea JFM good point . I think they would have tried to make that engine air cooled at some point too. Water = weight like Olham hit on to begin with, it might be worth looking into that
