I'm an XP dinosaur that's building a new system, mostly for flight sims. Is there any advantage to 7 or Vista over the other?

From my experience as a gamer/poweruser who migrated from XP:
1. Windows 7 is a great speed upgrade from XP and well worth it 2. Vista is a slow pile of crap with no new benefits from a gaming perspective, avoid at all costs
My opinion based on upgrades to both.

yeah, Avoid Vista...
it was said that the Early Beta's of Windows 7 were already Deemed better than Vista.
Im betting there are 2 separate design teams in MS.
Windows 95 - Awesome Windows 98 - CRAP Windows 98 SE- Awesome Windows ME - Revolting Windows XP - Awesome Windows Vista - Crap Windows 7 - Awesome Windows 8 - Disaster

Win7 had better driver support, or at least faster adopted. IMO W7 is Vista with a service pack and appearance change, slightly dumbed down in inconsequential areas. I've got Vista running on one desktop for the family and light gaming, W7 64 on my main rig. Both are far more advanced than XP. No reason to go with Vista with W7 out though, might as well go with the main OS and the one that will be supported the longest.

Yeah for me, especially Win7 64bit version, speeded up things from XP 32bit as observed for FSX and other games... not sure if it was the drivers or move to 64bit memory management or what, but it was noticeable on my particular hardware at that time (intel C2D E8500, AMD5870).
Windows8 does look like another Vista disaster, similar situation, they redid the UI but provided no other benefits, I am definitely skipping it.

Windows Vista is the older sister that is nice to look at from a distance, but then you notice the nasty limp and the left skew-eye that always seem to be looking at you. Windows 7 is the feisty horny prettier younger sister that does all the same as the older one, but has learned a trick or two on her own. Capice?

Think Star Trek movies, there you avoid the odd numbered movies
Windows - avoid the even numbered editions

I went from XP to Vista to Windows 7 (and tried out Windows 8). Vista has serious problems. I had lots of issues going from XP to Vista. Media Center in Vista does NOT support newer hardware like Media Center in Windows 7. Windows 7 is far better in every way -- in particular, it was more compatible with stuff left over from XP (though some non-game things will be incompatible). Really, I see no actual reason to want anything different or "better". Having said that, I assume on an older system, XP to Windows 7 will have some hiccups -- on a new system, it should just work. Windows 8 has a poor interface for desktop use -- but is good for interconnecting computers and devices. Even though its second rate, I'll probably buy a couple copies (I have a few working computers in the house) since they will be selling it cheap at first (and throwing in Media Center which becomes extra cost later). Opinions
