I have seen a marked improvement with the current beta (10.10b5). Frames on my iMac with a mobile GPU are 50+ ALWAYS with HDR off, even over Seattle with Objects set at "Too Many". HDR on is also much better but still not to my liking unless the vis is 3 miles or less. Also, the colors and contrast have improved. Where before they were dull and washed out they are now fairly close to reality. I'd say that, even considering my tendancy toward placebo effect, I am seeing at least a doubling in performance with no hardware changes. With "Flight" in the trash bin and FSX getting a little long in the tooth, X-Plane 10 is close to the point where it is an obvious replacement for either. The long beta process is starting to make since.
(EDIT: I listed the wrong version--current is 10.10)
Rather than being long in the tooth I think with OrbX FSX is just hitting its stride! With every new release from OrbX they seem to be increasing scenery quality and increasing performance. But will certainly be getting X-Plane10 re-installed after a windows re-install and get all the updates. Can't beat it for helicopter dynamics!!
On my top end PC which runs FSX at 30 FPS locked, XP10 runs even smoother and faster, which is something that was not the case initially when it came out.
I would recommend anyone that tried and was disappointed by the performance of the initial demo to let it update and check how it works now, also they have updated some of the builtin planes and the view system, adding EZDOK like views which makes it much less of a shock coming from my pimped out FSX.
I still love FSX best for the visual pleasure and ATC and traffic, but am really enjoying the flight dynamics in XP10 as well, especially the helicopters.
But on a serious note, they'll need to get it running up to stuff on windows pcs if they want this to start putting some preassure on the fsx market.
I did run it on the "Windows side" of the same PC a few betas ago and it ran IDENTICALLY to Mac. Guessing here, but I'm sure the performance is still the same.
I just installed the demo of this and it runs beautifully. Better than FSX, and the settings are pretty high. The night lighting and visibility effects are phenomenal, although both sims seem to suffer from a "hyperspace" effect when it rains.
I'm a little concerned at how good or bad the global scenery is, and how much the third parties work on scenery tools, as this seems to be less popular than FSX due to being less well known, and more expensive.
I currently have FSX with REX, UTX Europe and GEX Europe, although I mainly fly around the areas I know. Does anyone know how well the UK, especially Scotland is done in X Plane?
I'm probably going to pick it up regardless at some point anyway.

I’ve been using XP10 for the last 5 months or so. I still use FSX to as well as Aerofly and ROF and DCS world. The global scenery by default is great for rural areas and mountainous parts of the world. Not so much for urban areas. However, there are tons of free scenery that fills in a lot of this with Open street map data. People have been converting the data and posting it on X-plane.org or you can do it for yourself if your area is not already done. There are also tons of freeware airports to download. Some excellent quality and some not much more than a default FSX airport. I use "WED" an easy to use freeware scenery program to build the airports in my home town (LI, NY). It only took about 2 hrs. to do about 5 airports which I made look very much like I know them to be.
I’ve converted some of my FSX scenery to XP10 using a free converter tool FS2XP). This is also very easy to do, but you have to have purchased this scenery for FSX. It all sounds a little intimidating, but it is quite easy. I’m an idiot with this stuff and it was easy for me.
As for the rain effects, yes, XP10 still has that hyperspace effect that FSX has. I wish/hope this can be addressed sometime. Clouds are another issue in XP. They look great when flying through them, but tend to look like smoke from a distance. At certain times of the day, they look great at others, they look horrible. However the effect of flying through them is amazing and I guess that matters more to me. There are some freeware clouds that I just installed last night, which make them look a little better, so hopefully we will see even better ones down the road.
This video (not mine) shows what it all looks like if you combine some pay ware, Openstreet map data and default scenery together: It’s hard to beat and looks even better in person. The plane used in this video is the Rollons CRJ 200. Its pay ware and does not come with XP10 but it’s one of the best if not the best plane for X-Plane. Full working FMC and all that, if you’re into that stuff.

Great thread! I’ve been wondering about X-Plane 10 for a while and I’ll definitely be giving it a try now.
I’m just getting back up to speed with my flight simming after a reinstall of FSX, UTX, GEX and REX etc but once I get that sorted, I’ll be branching out to a sim that’s still alive and kicking
That brings me to another question ...
If Austin Meyer would drop off the face of the earth tomorrow, would X-Plane continue to be developed?

I don't think Austin is nearly as involved with development now as he was in the early years. If you follow the dev blog on xplane.com you will run across few if any posts by him. I get the feeling that he has never followed the Steve Jobs model. He seems more like the ultimate collaborator and facilitator.
A few suggestions for people who might be interested in improving (or beginning) their experience:
Opensceneryx= A massive database of objects used by scenery developers. It doesn't change anything unless called by a location in the Custom Scenery folder. Nils' BK117= The best add-on model I have ever seen in any sim. It is the most beautifully rendered cockpit out there, with possible exception of DCS:A10. Greg Hoffer's F-104= What a ride. And it comes with 2 other F-104s that are always there to practice low-level formation flying with. Munich: I forget who made it. But it's on X-plane.org and is the perfect place to practice Cat III approaches. The airport is just packed with objects and planes. Any helicopter by Brett Strumpler= They are all free on X-plane.com. The most refined is his R-44. x737= Another freebe. The 737 7/8/9/9ER are the planes I fly for a living. I've assisted them a bit but honestly helping test a flight model that I know so well in life is surprisingly difficult. My input has been so contradictory at times that they no longer call on me for help. Currently, there is only a 2D pit but 3D is coming soon. In the meantime, the systems modeling are quite realistic and the flying is about as close as you can get without a REAL (linked under the floor) yoke.
PS: what is the "hyperspace effect"? I ask because flying in real life through rain or snow at speed looks exactly like the Star Wars hyperspace scenes.
