Our next campaign task is to go after a mobile command and control array located on the far side of Kobuleti airfield. Once again, I’ll seek the safety of striking from the ocean with stand-off weapons since the area is still very active with anti-air units. Fuel load will be 70% due to the short sortie distance.

A close study of the mission planner is essential to getting a feel for the target area. Approaching from the west I’ll concentrate on finding the river that flows to the sea and can use it to guide my TGP imagery onto the target area.

And we’re off…

I fly well out over the ocean and turn parallel to the coastline. While moving north toward the run in point I can use the TGP slewed off to the right to search the target area. I slave it to the target waypoint and it only takes a few seconds to locate the C&C loiter area. Not very well camouflaged for such a high value target!

My threat receiver is lighting off so I call in the SEAD flight and they get to work around the airfield.

Being a SAM operator in the region isn’t a career with much longevity…

I reach the FENCE IN waypoint and start my turn to the right and assure my Maverick optics are warmed up (or cooled down?)…

The F10 map shows a ton of targets, but I’m focused on the trucks near the bend in the river.

I designate with the TGP then hand off the target to the Maverick. The “wagon wheel” on the HUD indicates where the Maverick seeker is looking.

Perhaps due to my fairly high altitude (around 15,000’), it takes a long time to get my Maverick to lock on. It is frustrating to wait but eventually I get a lock and I press and hold the button and a second later the Maverick rockets from the rail.

”Uh..we might want to move out…”

Through all the radio chatter I hear “Hawg 1-1, Magic, Merged!” That means an enemy aircraft is right in my vicinity and I start jinking and moving toward the ocean. My CAP flight is on the case and they go supersonic and quickly close the distance to my area before launching an AMRAAM. I don’t know how close I was to getting shot down, but the Su-25 pays the price (he needs a Su-27 CAP!)…

I extend out over the ocean then turn back for another strike. No, I still haven’t learned MARK point ripple firing, but it is on my list of things to learn in the next few days! As I slew the Maverick seeker onto the target I see a MANPAD launch and the missile streaks across the Maverick field of view. Glad I stayed high!

I get another close in lock and another Maverick goes downrange…

With the missile trail fresh in my mind I pull off and pop flares and chaff just in case.

Never bring an AK to a Maverick fight…

I make a couple more passes and clean up the rest of the vehicles. They move around a bit, but they don’t really make a real effort to escape.

I head back offshore. There are a ton of other targets in the vicinity, but it is extremely late, I’m exhausted (real life) and to keep from doing something stupid I throw in the towel and head back to base. I don’t know if there is any incentive to attriting enemy forces in the campaign missions.

Safely back at base. I hate to bring ordnance home, but sometimes you just have to take the small victory and fly again another day.

Nice! And thanks for including the meaning of "merged"! That had puzzled me but for some reason I'd never thought to look it up... good to know!

Question for those in the know - will CBU-97 "pucks" attack soft skinned targets like trucks and communications vehicles?

You may have seen my recent teething troubles with 97s on another thread (I was paranoid that they wouldn't target BMPs) - I think in the end I needed to put more effort into wind correction and just plain getting them on target - but they WILL target trucks and other vehicles like the targets in this mission.

I've used 97s on this particular mission before and got positive hits, the only problem being that the trucks in my case were quite well spaced apart and I could only get 2-3 with a single can. Makes me feel bad knowing how expensive they are^^

Hmm...the sensors in the real BLU-108 skeets key off engine temps, I believe - I would expect them to target any "hot" vehicle, armored or no.

Great screenies, Beach! Do you pull them off while you're playing, or do you go back and pull them from a track? Do you use the in-game PrntScrn capture or an external tool, like FRAPS? Any post-processing?

Hello chris!
Glad to see you made it through level 2.

Also, glad you took some of my advice from 2 as well.

Here are a couple of things also from 3 that you would trim into place;

- some lights are active (to make the lights disappear, press Lalt + P or LCtrl + P. this will turn off all external lights without worrying about switches.

- the incentive to attrite enemy forces in the campaign gives three things, first, the more kills you have, the more medals you unlock.
second, the more kills you have, the more score you achieve, third and finally, the more kills makes you more familiar with A-10 and its systems as well as using the gun, which, purportedly, is a life experience to many people.

- Merged and AWACS callsign

AWACS
Enemy aircraft has come within 5 miles of player
"Merged"

AWACS
New enemy aircraft has taken off that the AWACS/GCI has detected
"(a), (b), pop up group bearing (x)(x) for (y)(y)," where (b) is either "Olympus" or "Overlord" depending on if the player is flying an American or Russian aircraft, (a) is the callsign of the player, (x)(x) is the bearing to the threat in degrees, and (y)(y) is the range to the threat in miles if flying an American aircraft or kilometers if the player is flying a Russian aircraft. Example: "Puma one one, Olympus, pop up group bearing zero nine zero for three five."

AWACS
New enemy aircraft comes within 50 miles of player
"(a), (b), bandits bearing (x)(x) for (y)(y). (c) (d)," where (b) is either "Olympus" or "Overlord" depending on if the player is flying an American or Russian aircraft, (a) is the callsign of the player, (x)(x) is the bearing to the threat in degrees, (y)(y) is the range to the threat in miles if flying an American aircraft or kilometers if the player is flying a Russian aircraft, (c) is the altitude of the contact, and (d) is the aspect of the contact. Example: "Puma one one, Olympus, bandits bearing zero nine for three five. Angles medium, Hot"

AWACS (F5)
Vector to Nearest Bandit (F1)
Player requests the bearing, range, altitude and aspect of the nearest enemy aircraft.
If AWACS/GCI has contact with an enemy aircraft then: "(a), (b), bandits bearing (x)(x) for (y)(y)(y). (c) (d)," where (a) is the callsign of the player, (b) is either "Olympus" or "Overlord" depending on if the player is flying an American or Russian aircraft, (x)(x) is the bearing to the threat in degrees, (y)(y)(y) is the range to the threat in miles if flying an American aricraft or kilometers if the player is flying a Russian aircraft, (c) is the altitude of the contact, and (d) is the aspect of the contact. Example: "Puma one one, Olympus, bandits bearing two zero for zero three five. Angles medium, Hot." If AWACS/GCI does not have contact with any enemy aircraft then: "(a), (b), clean," where (a) is the callsign of the player and (b) is Olympus if the player is flying a US aircraft or Overlord if the player if flying a Russian aircraft. Example: "Hawk one one, Overlord, clean." If enemy aircraft are within five miles of player then: "(a), (b), merged" where (a) is the callsign of the player and (b) is either Olympus or Overlord depending on the side the player is flying for. Example: "Dagger one one, Overlord, merged."

So, what was your fuel consumption, time on station, etc.. you forgot to post your debrief screen/file. Speaking of which, is there a debrief reader that I can use to track my actions without replaying an entire track just to see the actions at the track debrief??

Hi Beach the imaging from the Mavs seem really good at that distance. Are you making sure you force a lock with tms forward short? Rather than waiting for yhe lock?

Also a quick stop gap between using multiple markpoints, you can just slave the next mav to the spi on the tgp( which is prbably the same target youvd launched at) and then just slew it to another target next to it and lock again and fire. As long as you've built a good picture of the target area using the tgp you can just slew to right for an AAA unit, fire, slave, slew off to another unit to the left and fire.

Edit: awesome pics and write up again! Looking forward to the next pc pilot article too.

Cool Down! - You need to cool down the IR sensor to get a picture.

Nice AAR, again.
