Looks awesome to me!

That front fan cover looks like a massive air brake to me on those short take-offs.

All those fan/nozzle doors. Lots of moving parts. How easy would it be to damage those mechanisms and have a real tough time recovering??

Very nice video, and good point Recluse. Maybe after taking damage they can still be jettisoned like a canopy before ejecting and still be able to vertical land and save the jet?

I thought the same thing. The marine environment is tough on things. Seems like a very complex aircraft. I'll be curious what the maintainers think about it after a few years in real service..

Is it just me, or does Wasp look like a modernized Essex-class carrier? It looks just like a World War II carrier, and it's interesting to watch F-35s doing takeoffs like back in the day where they had no catapults. I wonder why they didn't do a ski-jump nose like on the old British Harrier-carriers for Marine Harriers?

I also would like to know whether they've done tests with the F-35B carrying a full combat load of bombs and missiles for a combined A2A/A2G heavy mission like they'd do over Afghanistan. I'd like to see that STOL takeoff with a full combat load. I'm sure it's designed to do that.

Haven't they been using something similar on the AV8's Harrier for a while?Still.I imagine it would be a bigger problem landing on a carrier than over land.

Still must be some advantages to having Short Take Off and Landing without cats.Wonder how it's gonna work once they load all the ordnance and fuel on her for full operation?

Also wonder what kind of legs she has when you are 600 miles out at sea?Guess they have that worked out.

That lift fan door is probably one of the more obvious changes from the original X-35, which featured two doors opening to the sides, like the front undercarriage.
I remember that the F-35 was described as a bunch of doors flying in formation. Just as true today as it ever was smile

SeaAce, I think the combat radius on internal fuel of the -B was 470nm; the -C and -A are around about 600-700nm.

Hope the nose lg stand up to the abuse, it didn't look good towards the end of the video.
