I don't believe that one really is supporting the genre by buying every sim released. It simply sends the message that companies can release the buggiest, crappiest product and still count on simmers paying for it.
Support those who put out good products. The others deserve no economic support for they are actually helping to destroy flight sims.

I've bought EAW, CFS1 thru 3, Rowans BOB, BOB WOV, The IL-2 series, ROF, WOP, and have had more than my monies worth in all but maybe CFS3. Even an unfinished COD has alot of entertainment value, that I've enjoyed, but I'm now waiting for further patches to finish and evaluate it. If people bought any of this group have they unwittingly help kill the combat flight sim genre? These developers didn't kill the genre, the detail required, time, cost, and small demographic has nearly killed the genre. People who bought COD may have saved the genre, it certainly would have been shut down after release if it hadn't been supported, only time will tell.

P.S. I've seen enough interesting work in WT to spend a few dollars to asses it for myself. Our support for WOP helped make WT happen, and thats not a bad thing. WOP was only a few features and larger maps from making for a decent combat flight sim, hopefully WT has learned some lessons from their first efforts.

I have a shelf full of sims i bought 'to support the genre'.

WASTED MONEY.
[Admin edit]Edited - No fraud accusations please[/Admin edit]
We are going through a period for the past 10 years or so, of developers releasing incomplete products, never finishing them, and demanding more money to obtain features that should have been in the initial product.

We're still waiting for a working product - and we should not be fooled by the smokescreen that is 'added features' that is used as a justification for charging for functionality that is not made available otherwise.

I'm a simmer at heart - but lately - there really hasn't been much worth buying.

I flew the IL-2 series for almost ten years of priceless entertainment for a few dollars. It doesn't bother me for a second to spot the COD developers a couple more dollars in the hopes they can finish the new game engine to base another series of theaters. They already have our money, yet their still trying to make it right. Call them a crap developer all you like, but they're the only developer trying to build a very detailed WW2 aircombat flight sim. Although I still have some hope for WT, but from what I've seen so far it may just be another good looking WOP.

Do you think it is because they love us so much, have pride in their work or are forced to not to kill any chance of having at least 3% of the Dover customers to buy the so called sequel?

Chivas, you have said yourself, they need to fix COD before they release BOM. They are not doing it for the love. Do you think they would be fixing COD if they had decided to make a FPS game next instead of a flight sim?

You appear to be confusing the flight sim genre with a particular flight sim product. And given what has occurred since CLOD's release, I think that flight simming would be in a better state if it had been shut down right after release. Much better than this slow death that has lead to so much acrimony.

Dead wrong. ALL sims forums are not dead. DCS and BMS are consistantly 4-5x the traffic of CoD (was not the case on release of CoD). Quality products attract users and failed broken software drive users away. WW2 genre is waiting for something to replace the failure of CoD. If Gajiin puts out a decent product that works well OOTB, CoD is finished permenantly.

Heh, interesting edit there Icarus (that's Chivas' quote, not mine go back and check). I agree with you, not all the forums are dead, just all the ones for CoD. Even IL-2 1946 has more activity, both on the forums, and online, than CoD.

I truly do hope they've got everything sorted out this patch, I doubt it, but it would be nice to finally get the sim they have promised, and I paid for.

Your comprehension skills need work if you see that statement has anything to do with love for the community. They are doing it to continue to put food on their tables. The only way they can do that is fix the game engine, which by default will fix most of COD's major problems, and make the sales of future Sequels and MMO's possible.
