I use a Seagate external hard drive to store pics and impt b=docs as a back up.
Of late I've had this issue where the drive is not recognised. Windows reports a generic error which after googling doesn't really help much - error 43.
Using Win 7 Home ed.
Any ideas? I need to retrieve some documents and emails I stored in that drive.

Windows is a 32 bit shell for a 16 bit extension to an 8 bit Operating System designed for a 4 bit microchip by a 2 bit company which can't stand 1 bit of competition.

Update:
1. Uninstalled the drive via device manager. USB driver installed successfully after plugging it back in.
2. However under COmputer it shows a generic "Local Disc" rather than the specific make that it used to show.
3. Trying to open the device leads to an I/O error.

Is the drive bad? Any way to tell?

Try GetDataBack (NTFS or FAT).

it could be a missing file system file for whatever reason or a physical problem with the USB Controller.

I had a USB 2.0 Drive that worked on my PC, but on other PCs in the house it did exactly what you're seeing.

I wish i had this program in 2004, I would have saved 500GB of Digital videos I had edited.

Thanks for the replies. Will give it a go when I have the time.
On a side note, any recommended brands for external drives? This experience has me wary of Seagate products.

This guy is a miracle worker. I cannot recommend him highly enough. He has saved several TB of data I thought I'd lost over the years, and has a "pay what you can" policy. I would recommend anyone with a defective drive contact him. If you use his services, please tell him Ben (me) referred you. Thanks.
