I'm considering getting one of these touchscreens for Helios/Hawgtouch with DCS A10 and FSX, and wondering what you guys think of it. My two major concerns are a) mounting it in my (Akers-Barnes-based) cockpit, and b) whether the Thrustmaster MFDs will conflict with the infrared touch detection?

Any opinions?

cheers

not knowing details of IR technology i would say nothing to fear as Cougar MFD does not get warm during use (at least mine). But i have no idea if the display looks for the 37° human temperature
MAy i ask is if you are using the touch screen why do you need the cougar MFD also? (realism?)

Not realism per se, but I just like buttons. Lots of buttons smile

I guess I can mount them a little proud of the screen to ensure they don't interfere. What is the button tension like - do they need a firm press, or just a light one?

mine are pretty much light (but I'm pretty much strong) i mounted the MFD on the bezel and used some rubber foam sheets to minimize stress that the part that is suspended over the panel could cause when pressed (because i am lazy) but the best thing would be to buld a frame .

Loc: Caput Mundi (well, it used to ...
Generally IR based touch screens detect the touch using the interruption of IR beams in front of the screen. This means that the touch detection is handled by their bezel, and putting another smaller bezel on the screen will essentially occlude the touch sensor. On the plus side these touch screens (and the resistive ones) will work fine while wearing gloves, something that keeps them competing with the more expensive and precise capacitive touch screens.

Well I bought it, and it's in. It fits beautifully and works really well with Helios. Only challenge was mounting it, as it doesn't come with a bracket, but I removed the little rubber feet and used the cavities to secure it. You can see there's a little bent aluminium bar underneath.

Not bothering with the TM MFDs at this point, I'm happy enough with Helios.
