I got it for the boys, and they liked it, the scenery is pretty good but there's a lack of 'tasks', etc that may make it a bit repetitive after a while. That and the fact you're tied to rails and only going backwards or forwards..

Sounds kind of like the Call of Duty series lol.
I like them though for cheap easy fun. I've always been interested in these rail sims but wish there were more task oriented designs to them.

I'm a train driver and got this just because it was a couple of quid and thought I would give it a go. I was a bit disappointed as there is so much they could add to make it more challenging and realistic, I love my Job and really enjoy driving trains and theres more to it than what your able to do in rw. But rw is fun and I like playing with the diesels
You're right, it is kind of fun and easy to get into. The scenery in add ons can be much better than the default, think ORBX for Rail works..
jdbecks,
Agreed rw can be fun. What engines do you drive these days? I'm looking for a career change soon, and the Railways look like a good option. Do you have to be a graduate to drive & what are the 'tests' like?

I'm in the UK so it will be quite different from America, you do not need to be a graduate, but the recruitment, selection process and tests are quite tough, they say for 8 or 9 positions 3000 applicants will apply for the Trainnee positions.
I love it, I was an engineering manager before and really wanted a career change and it was the best decision I done, the pay and working conditions are very good.

Hey guys,
did you guys try the addons. The addons add realism - think of the default out the box like a slightly better Microsoft Flight simulator. Its just a base that you can add realism or relaxed addons too. Though I should add here that when it comes to trains relaxed realism is for me so out of the box is just fine for my needs, and although really tempted ive yet to add any payware DLC just yet, though I reall want that Class 60 or a nice Class 58.
Also remember to checkout the DLC for FREE new tasks and bits + good news is that ttrain simulator 2012 will be soon on steamworks, something I am really really really looking forward too
Heres the official promo;
Steam workshop is an all in one stop for addons, and quite simply works. The addons and range of stuff you can now easily access for games like Skyrim through steam workshop is awesome and given the massive amount of addons for train sim i cant wait for a nice one stop shop for it all.
I'm wondering how the Steamworks thing will work out. Most freeware addons are only available via the pay-for-premium UK Trainsim site and that's the go-to place with little offered elsewhere. Non premium can DL from UKTS but it's very slow. I can't work out if the Railworks community like it that way or would prefer to see an alternative.

Yer, I know what i'd prefer too Vitesse. I can see it being a great addon hub. UKTS is good but it is what it says on the tin mostly. Steamworks should help open everything up a little more worldwide so not just uk repaint will appear but also some interesting none UK stuff. One of A2A's modellers is another trainsim user and he has Polish stuff in his install.
Actually UKTS is useless unless you pay. I tried few times to download some addons from their site but I simply refuse to pay a middleman for others people work.
I hope Steam Workshop will work out well. It's big thing.

I was weak and today took advantage of the massive railwaorks sales on steam and purchased the 'Settle to Carlisle Add-on' for half price. New route + new locos etc in one nice easy bundle.
Here I am taking out the included 158DMU for a passenger stint before dusk.

Understand your opioin, But the fee goes towards supporting the servers and everything else though. A lot of other sites out there of course to use for Railworks content.
I Love UKTS and have quite a few scenarios uploaded there as well.
Steam Workshop feature i am truely looking forward to as another method of sharing all content which gives it more of a public eye.
My own test route. From Edinburgh & Glasgow From Edinburgh & Glasgow London to Brighton Scenario im working on for The Mayflower Lines.

Hey Chris will you be putting your stuff on steamworkshop when it becomes availible?
UKTS is a no go for me, I cant afford to pay for freeware and the non pay speeds are so slow that a 14.4 modem meaning even a simply repaint is impossible to download. Its a real shame too as theres lots of nice stuff as UKTS just wish it was more open.

There were some really brilliant add-ons for the original TrainSim... the "Biggetal", with 1970s German trains; an American guy named Chris made some really gorgeous Dutch rolling material... hopefully these can be ported somehow to Railworks.

The ones involving default stock (for the routes avaible_ will going on Steam Workshop, those involving extra DLC will wait though until i find out how those are sorted. I understand that many do dislike UKTS and i can't blame them really, i find it incredibly helpful though myself + Don't rule out the forums as very very helpful.
If you fancy any of my scenarios just PM me and i will send them via Email, Skype etc

Might have to reinstall Train Sim and see what difference the 2012 update made.
It has improved a lot and improving all the time gladly.

He is remaking/ porting stuff to Railworks. Although he has gone the payware route, i believe due to the amount/ increased amount of work needed for RW Stuff. I just hope he will port that ever so lovely Eurostar to Railworks.

Really nice screens gents. Do they still operate the 37's? I remember seeing them as a kid, but haven't been back to the UK for so long now. The Canadian trains over here are more like 'ah, I'll be at this crossing waiting for an hour for it to pass, it's 10km long'

Thank you.
Correct they do DB Schenker (Was EWS before Deutsche Bahn brought it), DRS and Network Rail, WCRC still use Class 37s and so do many preserved railways as well.

I would love to see a highlight reel from a "mission" (or whatever it's called), something from in-game which shows some of the spects of what you do and also the scenery from the driver's pov. I feel myself strangely drawn to this even though I'm not a train nut . . . but I fear that the DLC might be addicting.

Hi LB,
some screens from the drivers position, only German locos though:
E18, a payware addon:
Stock BR101, most modern German Electric locos lokk so though. The screens left and right are fake
Stock V200, a Diesel from the 50ies as seen below:
The tasks you have to fulfill are a simple text list you can bring on the screen with a key. Sometimes you get a pop-up on the screen too, mostly "simulating" radio-messages, but this depends on the scenario-maker.

yup,
Koeblitz Mountain Route.
btw. currently is worked von v3 of it, there will be added f.e. a fast track for the ICE and the layout especially at trainstations will be made more realistic with more smooth curves. Don`t know though if it will be an free update or a payware addon to the addon.
You are right, SAD has a good eye for details, I really like his work.
btw. if you also like to drive in Germany, I recommend the DL section of www.rail-sim.de, there is a reworked version of Hagen-Siegen, which looks much better than the stock one.

Haven't tried that and shall give it a go. I do enjoy some german stock especilly the VR 143 Pro locomotive as so much mroe fun to drive. As for British stock best examples are the Just Trains Class 67 (miles better then the RSC one) Just Trains Voyager Advance (Use them a lot and look and sound real and lots of nice features, Oovee/Thomsons Class 150/2, and finally Karma99 56xx GWR Tank engine.

Oh my word have you guys seen this latest from the railsim guys;
This is awesome news for me, nice easy and quick replayability for whatever little journey I fancy. Mucho appreciated, the news coming from developers of rail sim has been exceptional recently
Flightsim guys, think QUICK MISSION BUILDER and the normal editor is the FULL MISSION BUILDER
Only just started playing around with Railworks 3, so this thread has been really interesting! For my part, I would like to share one of my favourite screenshots, hope you enjoy it.
And on a slightly different note, I was at the Western Somerset Railway station in Bishops Lydeard, took a bunch of piccies of the steam engine and a small video of the departure. Unfortunately I didn't have time to ride the beast so to speak, but if anyone is interested I wrote a small article on it and have provided the link below.

Truly does look great. MSTS had a similar method. Can't wait to see the other tech they reveal, also 'apparntly' Multiplayer is in the works as well.

Lovely Screen, Scotsman looks at home everywhere. Also hopefully the real one will be in action again as well.
Large Praires are lovely locomotives and lovely to work on. I shall take a look at the link as well. I do suggest the Severn Valley Railway as well though (Although biased since live right next to it, half way along the line)

Even though I think this quick-mission builder is great for beginners like me, listening to the pros f.e. @ rail-sim.de, it seems the sim is still lacking seriously in the core, the sim-aspect. It seems it is very difficult to create realistic behaviour for AI trains and signals.
Sim could be more stable too.

Won't be great just for beginners but for everyone to test new stock etc, Then having to dive into the scenario creator tool.
I understand the points that many over on Rail-sim.de give really, apart from lacking terribly in default german stock many of the systems used in German are not included in Railworks at all.
The dispatcher is incredibly annoying as many moves you 'should be' able to do are not possible since it gives errors and refuses to budge and work. Which for me has led to many scenarios being mothballed, until i can be bothered to try and fix them.
I would still like to know how to use the cinematic camera, but yet no documentation is out for it.

Hey Chris,
one thing that does annoy me is that I cant have directional lights without the full overdone headlight effect.
Chris can I request some scenarios using this DLC + some standard TS2012 rolling stock, like the swallow '47 for passenger runs or the railfreight grey '47 for some runs. One thing so far ive noticed is that all that seems featured in the DLC is the DLC featured locos and rolling stock. Would be nice for a bit more variety, plus I think the Swallow livery is awesome.

thanks, Lewis
I admit the default lights are a complete pain, quite a few DMUs now do have fully directial lighting so Day, Night, Marker and Rear lights as settable.
Yes i will do so as will, do some more default stock ones and some that require DLC etc.

Nie screenies Chris. One thing I have noticed so far on S&C is the lack of any ruddy Sun or nice days! I know we live in grey and dull UK but given the yearly heatwaves you might of thought at least on railtour might be on a nice day hehe

Here is a video from one of my favourite scenarios "In the middle of the storm", the author of both the scenario and the movie is dw-agency. Btw. there are different versions, the is one which only needs freeware stuff.

Lovely screen first of all.
I haven't a clue, i know the Transpennine line is currently being made in a community project, also various others in the north east but not much news on them at the moment sorry.

thanks Chris. Trans pennine sounds right up my alley! I'm orginally from Grimsby and Lincolnshire you see so it would be nice to run around some old local rails. One was being developed for trainz way back when but I dont think that ever saw the light of day dispite some awesome screenshots of what it looked like.

I didnt like 2013 at first as I tried it almost first thing and there were a few issues until an hour or so after release re: DLC being imported correctly. All working fine now though, just got to find the time to run a few of our very own Chris89 scenarios he has up on steam worlshop. Also although ive not really played yet the quick drive option looks awesome fun for re-playability

yup,
RW runs very smooth now, even in complex scenarios. The load times are very short now too, the Northern Europe Route, which is really huge, took areound 3+ minutes to load, know it`s there in less than a minute.
Today some oldies, first virtual Railroads E18 in the snow:
Second, bought today, Eisenbahnwerks "Krokodil"

Some with Flying Scotsman and the new LNER Teak Coaches from Digital Traction on the Settle & Carlise. Which brings back memories of first getting MSTS.
Also some German screens with a lovely Taurus and the new DBbzf / DABz / DBz from Virtual Railroads (The BR111 / DBbzf / DABz / DBz EXPERT Line pack) On the ever so lovely freeware Altenburg-Wildau.
