I have bought REX, and GEX, tried out downloadable repaints, tweaked the crap outta of FSX and I still have not been able to get the kind of quality that I have seen in so many FSX videos demonstrating all these things offered by third party software. With that in mind I have some questions. First off my instrument panels in the cockpit look nothing like the nice high def panels I see in most of those videos, and the same can be said about the exterior of the aircraft, everything seems low rez, even with all details cranked all the way up, so how do I or where do I get or set it up to look like that? Do I need to buy new aircraft? Are there any good legit places to find anything like that for free? Please help. I am tired of FSX looking dated and grainy.

My first thought is you should click on Settings and then click the "Customize" button at the bottom right corner. Make sure that FSX recognizes your graphics card, then look at the resolution option that is selected. By default, I think FSX puts you at a low or medium resolution; try bumping it up to an option with higher numbers and with x32 at the end (ie, 1680x1050x32). You might have to experiment with the options until you find a ratio that is correct for your monitor.

Next, look at the "Aircraft" tab and make sure the High Resolution 3-D Virtual Cockpit box is marked. That might solve your cockpit problem.

Are your video card's drivers up to date?

Beyond this, it might be that you need to balance out the Target Framerate vs. scenery, weather, mesh, etc. Indiscriminantly setting all of the sliders to 100% might be counterproductive, as I think FSX starts automatically scaling back the graphics in order to try to match the target frame rate. I could be wrong though.

Running at my native 1920x1080x32, all drivers are up to date, virtual cockpit hi-rez enabled. Framerate is not an issue, I have everything cranked to the max with little to no hit to performance. I dont know, I am thinking that all the nice graphics I am seeing on all these videos of FSX must be third party HiDef models or sumthing cause FSX has never looked like any of them, not even once. I dunno I just got turned onto REX and GEX which definitely improved alot of the environment for me. Now I just want to improve some of the other aspects of the sim.

To sort of help you folks understand what I am talking about I have took some screens of my FSX and screens of other FSX.

Mine

Mine
Now these screens of mine dont look quite as bad right now of course because the forums have scaled them down, but at the full 1920x1080 they are less than desirable.

Desired

Desired

I hope that helps you folks understand what I am talking about. Any help in improving the look of these would be much appreciated.

Might simply be the case of having different aircraft... probably the desired ones are HD versions of the stock aircraft in the sim? The 2nd and 4th pics are obviously different aircraft. The 1st and 3rd pic, well, you might try a different view by pressing the "A" key while in virtual cockpit? Or zoom out "-" a bit?

It might also be a FSX config setting.

Make sure that in the Graphic settings you have:

Graphics->Global Texture Resolution = Very High (all the way to the right)
Aircraft->Cockpit Settings->High-res 3D Virtual Cockpit = Checked

-ice, thanks alot, that did work with the zooming in and zooming out, I tried finding a zoom key but never found it, nice to know I can do that now. I think your right on the wings textures, I think I am going to need a high def repaint at the very least to get rid of the blurry jaggies.

kludger, yeah everything is maxed as far as it can go.

I'm new to FSX myself, but I don't think it's just a repaint that will solve your problem. Take a look at the default Cessna 208. Decent enough, but blurry really if you look close. Then take a look at Carenado's C208 HD. Wow.

-Ice, I'm not new to FSX, I have played around with it for quite sometime, but I had taken a break from it for a while an when I came back to it all I could think is, wow that looks like crap, LOL! Yeah I dunno if just a repaint would work, or if I need to get a whole new aircraft. I wouldn't mind that so much except most of the really nice ones cost more than I paid for FSX, or are so realistic that it takes a real pilot just to figure out how to operate it. If you know of some really nice 3rd party aircraft that cost next to nothing, and looks tons better, please let me know.

Ah, 3rd-party and "really nice" rarely comes together in the FSX world. I bit the bullet, got me some terrain and aircraft and that cost me £100+ for a sim that cost £18. And I don't even have REX yet. I'm glad I'm still alive, I'll be in intensive care once the charges reflect in my bank account and the wife finds out!!

But I do know what you mean by realistic. I got a Cessna Citation X and DAMN that is a beauty!! Took her up for a spin and she has TWO Master Caution Lights! Made me realize I needed to get back to my training and work my way up as I was way in over my head with that aircraft!
