Today I updated my ATI Catalyst Control Center to the latest driver v12.6.
After that, my TrackIR software didn't work anymore.
So I deinstalled it, downloaded the latest version, and installed that one.
Still no joy - Error!

Fortunately I had made a backup of my whole Boot-Partition, and so I wrote that back.
And - TrackIR works fine again!

I would recommend not to install the latest ATI driver 12.6, if you use TrackIR.

How about the latest NIVIDA drivers? I have yet to install them due to my lack of a fast internet conection while spending the summer in the Colorado Rockies.

CW3SF, I recommend for all such updates, to make a backup of your bootdrive
(usually the C: partition) before installing.
I use ACRONIS BACKUP, but there are other such programs.
When you install new drivers, and they mess up something else, it is an easy
solution to write the backed-up partition back.

As for your NVIDIA-update: I never had such trouble before, and I guess it
was ATI's fault. But maybe NVIDIA users can tell you more here.

This whole thing about Nvidia drivers I never quite understood. When I installed my GTX480 around 6 months ago, was a GTX260. Nvidia and Windows 7 teamed up and before I could download the latest drivers, they did.

But the 260 was little long in the tooth, couple that to the fact Nvidia was pushing it's new 620, I saw the 480 for $179 . . MINE

From day one I new the 260 wouldn't last. That's why my PSU is a Corsair 750 Watt

But if you're happy with the performance level . . . . if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm cheap . . I know it . . every couple years. . an update is due

With an 8600GT in XP, I had a line in my sky for 2 years, and numerous driver updates, until finally the Line vanished . . . those drivers were used for three years, till they got changed

I believe it was around 2006, Nvidia offered drivers which slowed down the fan on the 8800, it was only downloadable for a few weeks, for the next couple months . .NOTHING

How Many Cards Got FRIED ???

I've been running the latest beta nvidia drivers since they posted. No problems with anything. TrackIR in particular up and running fine.

Yep, NVIDIA's fine. And you can trust the installer to cleanly uninstall drivers if you need to go back to a previous version. Windows also has features (system restore and driver rollback) to back up and restore before/after driver updates, and a heck of a lot easier than restoring your entire C:\ partition from backup (but do back it up!).

NVIDIA has handy instructions on both methods, but they should work just the same for ATI drivers.

Quote:
If you install the newer driver without first uninstalling the previous version, you may be able to simply roll back your driver to the previous version using these steps:

Windows XP steps to roll back your driver:

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance and then System (in Category view) or System (in Classic view)
Select the Hardware Tab
Click Device Manager
Double-click on Display Adapters
Double-click on your NVIDIA GPU
Select the Driver Tab
Click on Roll Back Driver

Windows Vista or Windows 7 steps to roll back your driver:

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Windows Vista: Click System and Maintenance and then System or simply System (in Classic view). Windows 7: Click System and Security and then System.
In the left pane, click Device Manager
Double-click on Display Adapters
Double-click on your NVIDIA GPU
Select the Driver Tab
Click on Roll Back Driver

Turn off Triple Buffering for OpenGL in ATI's Catalyst Control Panel to fix this.
