what are you doing to these things?
For 360's im on #3, but I've been abusing them since Day 1 (before actually). But my brother runs it in a Non AC hot room in the summer.
both units died in the winter, both were 3 red lights.
1st one, Playing Forza Motorsport 1 (before FM2 Launched). Turned off the unit, few hours later when the Fm2 Demo was online, pressed power, bam Red Lights.
2nd one, was starting to get periodic 3 red lights in the winter time, so I replaced it before the warranty ran out.
Both times they "repaired" the one I had.. 1st Failure was something dumb they replaced the main board and sent it back,
2nd Failure was the Heatsink coming loose and overheating, they replaced the aluminum brick with the heat piped heatsink. and repalceed the Xenon Mainboard with the Opus Mainboard (65nm CPU, 175w, but no HDMI.) Opus boards are the Replacement for launch consoles (basically MS didnt want to give use the boards with HDMI if we didnt already have HDMI Zephyr boards.
So no HDMI and still using over 100w

I think it's fair to say that the original designed Xbox was significantly flawed in it's basic design. All my xbox's have sat on top of a raised surface with no other hardware in or around them. Smoke and pet free home and regularly blown free of dust. I would contend that they have been well looked after and whilst 3 have been fixed within warraty period this one has outlived its warranty will not be replaced FoC by Microsoft. I have no real complaints as i have only ever paid for 2 xbox's (another with my kids is OK) However, the repaired units have always broken again in the end. I have now been offered a new Slim xbox for Ł100 from a mate and I am deciding whether i want to pay more for another box..

BIzzarely, the Xbox that was broken... Is now working again. We shall see how permanent this is. I am not confident of a long life.

Overheating?
Mine's been playing hell with Xbox Live / update / sign in.
Took me like an hour to get the update to install and my profile to sign in... played FM4 for a bit, shut off, a week later... same thing.

I've had 4 Xbox 360s, and 2 of them have crapped themselves. Oddly enough, my launch day Xbox 360 still works.

I think I'd replace mine if it went bad (again), since I can just get an arcade model and use my HD. Too many games that I really enjoy on there that I don't want to re-buy on pc, aren't offered on pc or just aren't as good on there. The big question for me is if I'm going to bother with the new one in a couple of years when it surfaces. Most of the games I like the most were earlier titles on the 360; gaming that was more interesting and varied than today's offerings.

I'd have to think long and hard before buying another Xbox at this stage. I just got a great new PC for gaming, so everything that is multi-platform I'm buying for it. With the Xbox 720 (or whatever they'll call it) possibly coming out in 2013, it would make me even more reluctant to buy a replacement 360. There's only a small handful of exclusives I would actually still play.

If my unit goes down, I can get a unit from GameStop for like $99 w/ a warranty through them, transfer my licenses, then move the HDD from one to the other.
