This is a standalone sequel to one of the most well-known realism mods for Half-Life 2 which was kind of like a modern warfare-themed Red Orchestra. The project lead for this is the founder of the Red Orchestra mod on Unreal, btw.

Definitely something to look out for.

I played Insurgency a while ago. You had Ironsights and other "tactical" features!...It was good until the players started bunny-hoping!...

To follow up...

8-minute gameplay video

It's essentially Red Orchestra with modern guns. More 90's tactical than COD/BF so if you liked that genre then give these guys the support they need as their kickstarter is still running.

Fixed it for you. I won't support it for the following reasons:

- They are making the game more mainstream to appeal to a broader audience.
- They are reducing realism in general. For example, there is now an ammo counter and a fictional variant of the M16A3. Even the real A3 was only produced in little numbers. They also added in kill messages.
- They are making maps smaller and more linear. No more Sinjars.
- They removed the squad/class system which ensured there would be well balanced squads. Now there are no restrictions.
- Throwing in unlocks and other junk.
- Small amount of content available.
- Ignoring the asymmetrical changes that could have been made to the opposing factions. Instead, they are continuing to make both teams play exactly the same.

Had they decided to improve INS, keep the realism, make the teams play differently and made more large open ended maps I would have been interested. Now they are simply making BF3: Hardcore, with worse graphics.

Flogger23m: Thanks for pointing that out, I saw insurgency 2 and went to put down my pledge before even reading the info on it. Then I read your comment, then watched the video. It's a real shame, and I hope they go back to their roots.

I was really glad to see the title of this thread as I enjoyed playing INS back in the day. I would team up with a mate on public servers and have an absolute blast of MP tactical shooter goodness.

The video disappointed me though:

- The pace of movement in INS for your character was slower than what was shown in the video which looks far too fast.

- Not a fan of the new class system. At all. Why completely scrap what they had?

So it looks like they have reached a fork in the road and took a left for Casualville. Red Orchestra was an excellent, or is I should say, game but Tripwire went in a different direction with RO2 instead of building on what they had. They paid heavily for it and landed up taking a sort of u-turn by including a 'classic' mode. Weren't the INS devs watching?

People want INS, not another generic shooter.

I guess as long as Call of Duty sells billions of dollars and hardcore like Red Orchestra don't devs will try to tap the Call of Duty pool.

To be honest, the HL mod I'd rather see made today is Hostile Intent.

From their own forums comes this post from Jeremy:

Quote:
Let me address each of your concerns:

What do you mean the sights are bad and its not realistic? Are you referring to iron sights or the eotech?

White outlines on weapons - this effect is temporary - it will look less "CSI-ish" eventually.

Stuff clouding the screen like monitors? Are you referring to the proxy indicator that tells you when teammates are nearby? I find this feature to encourage teamwork. If anything we'll just make the effect a little smaller so it doesn't take up as much of the screen.

About the game being "not realistic at all" there are a few things you should consider. First of all, the game has a long way to go and we know this, and we have already made player movement slower, recoil more when hipped, etc. Fine-tuning these gameplay features that impact the game's realism level are quite easy the way we have things set up. We will continue to improve upon the game and make it more realistic, as it's important to us to win over the current INS crowd.

Another thing you should note is that we actually have a free aim area in the game, but we just realized that it doesn't work when we play back demos. So what this means is, in the gameplay footage the weapon appears to be attached to the camera like most unrealistic FPS games when in fact that's not really the way it is in the game - the weapons in fact "feel" much more natural and realistic than in the video.

Please be patient with us - we will release new footage that shows you guys we care about the realism factor. The game will certainly look much much better in the coming weeks/months.

Thanks for the input

Jeremy

I guess if you really want the game to be like the old one, you go to their boards and talk to them. Just saying "nah won't support it unrealistic" accomplishes little. I always thought the whole point of crowdsourcing is community input.

I've re watched the kickstarter video and they mention that the free aim system will be present. The Alpha video reminds me more of call of duty then ins 1, but they mentioned that there will be a classic mode for ins players. I've gone ahead and pledged, will see how it turns out.

This is better than Red Orchestra. It looks tactical to me, at least there is no flying reticle in the middle of the screen and it does not tell you where the ennemies or friendlies are. I liked what I have seen so far.

I am gonna support that!
