It has been a while in the making, but like someone said all things come to an end sooner or later. VHR has had a excellent run of almost 6 years, in the video game world is very long time. More details to follow in the coming days over at the VHR site, but in a nut shell....the site will be up until Sept 1st, all downloads will be active right up to the last day. Probably the main reason why I am closing down VHR is to the fact that is no long fun to work on anymore. Someone people just want too much and do nothing but complain without knowing the amount of work that goes into something such as VHR. Other reason and the most important one is my family, I left the modding scene in February to focus on my family...and after a little bit of time away I thought I could come back and balance my time, but after working on 1.5 and then with the patches I started thinking of nothing else but the mod once again...and that is something I can not do, it isn't fair to my wife or my kids. Like I said, I make a more detailed post on my site tonight or tomorrow.
He's decided to close it down before, so we'll see if it happens this time.

// Development Update: 1.8 Update Scheduled For August 6th
• 7/20/12 - 1.8 update is scheduled for a August 6th release. Update will addresses such issues as engine tape, super speedway drafting package updates and along with a track surface update to Daytona. Some tracks will have their tire packages updates a bit in regards to handling characteristics. One of the most important things to come with the update will be the issues of cars dragging on the track and not loosing any speed. That issue has been fixed and those drivers that try and drive with their car dragging will suffer in the speed and handling department.
1.8 UPDATE - FIX / UPDATE LIST - New track terrain files for Daytona, Texas, Michigan and Indianapolis. - Updated VHR's engine cooling characteristics in regards to tape. - Updated drag ride height in the aero physic's, thus making you suffer speed wise from rising your ride height too high in the front or the rear. - New SS drafting package, now you can push and gain speeds, drafting speeds are close to the real deal and the high line is alive well. - Updated cube maps for car models for more realistic looking reflections. - Updated cockpit side mirror placement and windshield texture. - Updated track terrain files in regards to dragging friction levels on track surface and walls. - New sounds for Cup, Nationwide and Camping World truck series.

Why not just leave it up for downloads and discontinue support?

Why not just leave it up for downloads and discontinue support? I can't speak for him, but just based on the way he's done this before it seems to follow a cycle. 1. CD makes an update to VHR 2. People complain about things that are clearly broken 3. CD cries about it on FB and says everyone is ungrateful for all his hard work, he's shutting it all down so NO MORE VHR FOR YOU! 4. His fans massage his ego, tell him how incredible he is, and beg him not to 5. The next day, he relents, and says VHR will carry on.

It has been a long, sometimes bumpy, road for him. He's kind of a strange character at times but he still provided some dang good racing over the years. Still the best close door to door racing mod you can get IMO. It could really be the next iteration in the cycle Lug describes or maybe this really is it this time. I've heard from the lads I race ovals with that when it gets abandoned, It will likely be jumped on and development will continue provided there aren't some roadblocks put up upon his exit. There is still a very strong and dedicated VHR community out there. Time will tell.

Never been one for Oval racing, just never attracted me, that said i will agree it is one of the best mods out there ever made for rFactor

Even better: he's hinting at some sort of partnership with a company; sounds like he's going to be giving them VHR to use as a driving simulator for their arcade, or something similar.
I can see this ending poorly.
