There are TONS of written stories that have never been made into films already out there.
Too risky for them! Of course, with the obscene failure rate of these so-called "vetted" ideas, maybe they need to rethink their criteria for what they think will work?

The Jedi Master I should have added...."currently employed by Hollywood studios." I don't doubt that there are lots of great stories out there; it's just that producers and studio execs don't seem to care. This is getting ridiculous. I can't remember a single movie this year that I really wanted to see - except The Intouchables, and that is a French movie (and if you get a chance to see it, please do. It's great.)

Seems like a lot of scifi movies come from short stories. I guess that's due to time constraints working better with that format. We might never see an effort on the level of LOTR again, unfortunately.

Seems like a lot of scifi movies come from short stories. I guess that's due to time constraints working better with that format. We might never see an effort on the level of LOTR again, unfortunately. That's because trying to adapt the typical 400-500 page sci-fi novel into a 2-2.5 hour movie requires Herculean efforts. LOTR worked extremely well since Peter Jackson had the luxury of adapting it into 3 films.

My point exactly. How likely is that to happen again? You can never say never. However, It would have to be a director who pulls serious weight in Hollywood like Spielberg or Cameron. Oh wait, I think the next 2 Avatar movies have already been approved but of course those aren't based on novels.

It's being directed by the guy who made the Tropa de Elite movies, so at least the action should be good. Not thrilled about yet another remake...but Tropo De Elite was a great movie!
