The various fan forums are a abuzz with the official announcement for the next Total War game.

It has been confirmed to be Total War Rome II.

Here is a link to a preview with some still shots:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/07/02/total-war-rome-2-preview/

On a personal note:

This may sound like heresy, and although I am a great fan of the series in general, I am a bit disappointed that they are going back to this period in history since it is my least favorite. Being a fan, I of course bought the first Rome TW, but maybe only played through two campaigns. I also have both of the expansions and have never ever played them at all.

I was really hoping for a grand 19th century game battling world wide with all the emerging technology. At 67 this year, I hope I
will still be gaming when they get back to either Med 3 or Empire 2 or whatever they are going to call it.

Cheers

I was actually hoping for an Ancient Greece: Total War, but Rome will do biggrin

I hope that they will continue in the direction of the last few games, i.e. smaller but more detailed. A campaign spanning 300+ years (as in the original RTW) may look nice on paper, but it was simply too long, and it didn't allow much depth. I would much prefer it if they focused on, say, only 1st century BC, and expand to other eras through DLC campaigns.

Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres, quarum unam incolunt Belgae, aliam Aquitani, tertiam qui ipsorum lingua Celtae, nostra Galli appellantur. (...) Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae (...) wink

One of the developers commented that this period was by far the most requested so that explains why they went back. As for; "more detailed/smaller scale", the devs seem to be saying; "more detailed/larger scale!". How they pull that off remains to be seen.

More detail is always good smile As to more scale... we'll see.
I liked how in NTW and Shogun they divided the campaigns to focus on a particular conflict. My main gripe with RTW was how a handful of factions would conquer the entire map before the game was halfway through, usually wiping out factions like Gaul and Persia along the way, which left me without a chance to fight my historical enemies. Also the large timespan and the large number of generals made the political "control the senate" game feel rather meaningless.

That is why I felt a limited "1st century BC" campaign would be better. You'd get Marius vs Sulla, Pompei vs Caesar and Anthony vs Augustus, so together with all the foreign wars there would still be plenty of action. Hannibal at the Gates would make a fine DLC then biggrin

I like that approach.

Developer interviews: http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/07/02/total-...-campaign-game/

Things that sound promising:
- provinces will consist of several regions
- armies may gain traits
- ability to give orders from the tactical overview map
- "dilemma's", a series of choices the player must make, resulting in different paths

The "personal aspect" was mentioned a few times, so this could bring the depth that I was hoping for.

Expected release is Christmas 2013, so there is still time to re-read the Masters of Rome series by Colleen McCullough smile

Really hoping for an Empire Total War II (since, despite being so poorly done, it is still my all time favorite).

But this is a good second choice!

Then you may want to take a look here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1186

After 2 years absence I've been working on a major update for this mod, which should be released soon (just don't tell anyone)
My apologies for the shameless plug wink

I started Total War with Rome so it was a "wheel turns full circle" moment for me.

However, I kinda hoped for a continuation of the things they did so well in Shogun, into a Victorian setting.

The thing that made Rome great was the modding. If modding is opened up again the game will be legendary. If it remains tough for the modders, it could be a very ugly year for TW fans.

An interesting period with lots of conflicts around the world - American Civil War, Crimean War, Boer War etc. would be good.

Shogun/Shogun 2 is by far my favorite of the Total War series but I'll be picking up Rome TW 2.

Yes and Fall is my favorite of that series. It just looks great.

I'm a graphics bunny so I'm looking forward to seeing rows of javelin throwers at the front through the mist and fog.

Maybe it will look as good as the opening battle in Germany in "Gladiator"? biggrin

I hope you won't buy it as a protest against CA/Sega's shoddy support and sleazy business practices. Shogun 2 is festooned with splash screens touting the wonders of AMD video cards. Since the release of Fall of the Samurai AMD's current top of the line video cards, the HD 7000 series, cannot run Shogun 2 in DX11. Trying to run the game in DX11 will result in the PC locking up while emitting horrid noises from the sound card. This is a well known, 100% repeatable issue.

The game used to work in DX11 prior to the release of Fall of the Samurai. It doesn't matter whether you purchased Fall of the Samurai or not, Steam forced an update on all users and there's no option for a roll back to a previous version that would allow you to play the base game or Rise of the Samurai. This game (and probably PC) killing glitch has been known about for six months yet CA refuses to do anything about it.

Do not buy CA products. They'll gladly take your money and then sodomize you with a pine cone after the fact.

CA Did a damn good job with Shogun 2, it came out a little rocky because of the delayed DX11 stuff but it's a super well optimized and fun game plus both of the big DLC's they put out are excellent.

I don't use AMD cards so no thanks I'll go ahead and enjoy Rome 2 when it comes out biggrin

I'm sorry to hear about that mugwump. I had no idea the 7000 cards were having that problem. I have an HD 5500 and while I can run DX11 just fine in Shogun 2, I have noticed that sometimes the game fails to completely terminate after I exit. In other words, I'll exit the game and I'll still see "shogun.exe" still running in my task manager. This problem only started after Fall of the Samurai was installed.

I had some problems with my HD6900s initially, but after the first patch/driver update after release, they work fine.

I do plan to buy R2, as long as it the reviews show they did a good job with it.

PC games are full of sh;t like that. You just have to accept it. I won't do myself out of a gaming experience because of it.

I want to see hundreds of mounted javelins circling some poor sods running around the desert in the best graphics we've seen yet.

That's my great memory of Rome I. I run a 7850 and it doesn't seem to lock it up. Just lucky I guess.

Well, hope that CA doesn't retroactively do you out of a gaming experience down the road as they did to AMD HD7XXX series owners.

BTW, could you post your CPU socket set here? It appears that those with an 1155 socket and an AMD HD 7XXX card can still play the game. Those with 1156, 1366, or 2011 are SOL.

Yes that's what i've got 1155 and 7850. Just lucky I guess. I had AMD 1090T before this and had blue screen regularly so that I stopped playing. With the 1155 I've started a campaign, but TBH the replayability is poor. I like the visuals and animations, but the gameplay gets old because all the clans are the same more or less.

Rome needs to have faction variety very much. If they limit the scope down and reduce faction variety, then it really will be my last TW game/
