I am pretty sure that FA was a Windows based game. DOSBOX not required Runs on XP in compatibility mode, though the graphics are quite dated and maxed out at 1024x768 without cockpit iron.

I used to love Janes USNF/ATF/ATF GOLD in my formative simming years, and a few years ago (Gahhh.. maybe more than a few!!!) picked up a cheap copy of FA on EBay. IIRC, it ran OK on my XP rig in Win98 compatibility mode except that the graphics that would probably still be fine on a 17" CRT were pretty Fugly on a 22" Widescreen LCD. I like having the cockpit iron on the screen, but once you advance beyond 800x600 it is gone.

I am pretty sure there are still some FA information and addons sites still active where you might get more tweaking info for modern operating systems. Saw a link not too long ago in one of these forums...

^ yes I know most of what you said, I have played FA on Vista and 7 64bit 2 years ago, but ever since Nvidia 199 drivers, I got unsolveable graphics corruption... hence I want to try it on dosbox...

Unfortunately, DOSBOX doesn't help with non-DOS games. I haven't tried FA for some time, but I have similar unsolvable graphics corruption with EAW, MiG Alley and Wipeout 2097 since recent (past year or 2) Nvidia driver upgrades.

Good luck!!!

For what it's worth, FA runs fine on my XP machine with the NVidia 296.10 driver set. No graphics corruption. Doesn't really look as bad as I remembered either smile

System specs in .sig line.

No. The original US NAVY FIGHTERS and addons was DOS as was the follow on ATF and addons. ATF GOLD was Windows only as were the subsequent titles (USNF 97 and FA)

You can get ATF GOLD and install it on a virtualbox environment with windows xp. Then you can use the mode "switch to scale mode" in virtualbox, that scales the screen to play it in full screen.

I play FA *flawlessly* on Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

What I did was:
  • Patch to v1.02 (you need this for the game to play properly, otherwise everything goes too fast)
  • Go to http://farc.3synergy.net/files.php and get the Windows 7 Batch file (all it does is turns off explorer before launching, which causes the color problems and other issues, then turns explorer on after exiting)
  • Put the batch in the same folder as FA.EXE
  • Use the batch file to run the game.

I have never had FA be so stable.

Alternatively, you could just manually close out explorer before launching. It can later be run from, well, Run. Or Task Manager.

Also, something to note: Before doing this to play FA on my new computer I played FA in a Virtual Machine, at one point using VirtualBox and at another point using VMLite. On both of these, FA's stability was awful. It may just be my settings, but I'm not so sure.

I've been using this for a while to fix the color problems and add FXAA.
