For people who tried the demo

I figure the demo license needs to be transferred somewhere but I'm not eager to spend what seems to be 100 euros for a Codemeter dongle just for a limited-time demo.

Or am I missing something?

You are missing something. A user with an unused license on their CM stick shares this license over the internet/LAN/WAN/VPN. You pick up this shared license using the 'borrow' feature of the CM software and SB runs using this remote license. AFAIK this requires permanent connection just to maintain the handshake for the license, so is less convenient for local offline play, but should be no issue for MP trial, as the connection is then required in any case. Of course connectivity to the license host and game server/host might be different depending on net conditions, and the donor system being 'up'.

If you want to continue using the software after whatever the sharing user deems is 'fair use' then you purchase your own CM stick (and optionally additional licenses) at the quoted prices.

This can be arranged informally with a friend, by hooking up with someone who has a spare license offered on the SB Teamspeak server, or via the 'official' demo program via IIRC Sean.

In all cases the downloaded software is complete, and all that is required to move from ad-hoc or good-will dependent access and 'yours to do with as you will' is the CM stick.
