Hi Maurice,

since we went over to 1024 x 768 screens we have a problem with slow mouse response, if you click too quickly the game may miss it, take your time and all will be well smile....

also remember that some of the old screens have different 'active areas' to those in the new exe so always check with the right mouse button to see where to click on the screen, don't assume that text on-screen will always correspond to the 'active' area .....

cheers,

Pobs

EAW was very nearly killed off because of the dreaded 7217 error.
The selection screen graphic files are in an "ancient" compressed form of 8 bit PCX files, done to save memory in the 1990s when memory was at a premium.
The EAW exe always contained code to check that the user's PC could handle 8 bit graphics, and if not it was programmed to CTD with the error 7217 message. In the early days of EAW it was rarely a problem, but as the years went by video card makers and their driver writers stopped supporting 8 bit graphics. EAW gamers would update their PCs and find to their horror that they could no longer run EAW. It was particularly bad with Win 97 and XP, but for some reason it is less of a problem with Vista and Win 7.
As a result, Will Gee managed to make a workaround which kicks in if your card/driver cannot handle 8 bit. It is included in all of the 1.28 series of exes. The great side is that you can play EAW without the 7217 error. The minor downside is that when this workaround kicks in you get slow/stuttery mouse movements on your selection screens.
The actual gameplay is not affected in any way.

I use the d3d windower which appears to fix it.
It runs EAW in windows.
In the settings I use the selection screens appear in windows matching their native 1024x768 without distortion, and the game runs in a 1680x1050 window set by the eaw.ini file.
This fits nicely on the 1920x1080 monitor that I use.
There are several threads here re the d3d windower.

In answer you your question in another thread the version number is at the bottom left of the mainscreen. You probably have "V1.28e fix04".
We need to check with Ralf which of the later versions should be used- he has produced a few with experimental features to accommodate some ideas that Moggy has come up with for one of his campaigns in progress, so they are only test versions.

I have used the fix12 version on-line before with Pobs and Ralf
and Maj. Alvega. 13, 14 and 15 were basically made to test some
additional stuff that is now being tested with 1.3, so I have had
no need to use them. So far, fix12 has worked very well with no problems.

I have not been on-line in awhile thou, so I would need to ask Pobs and Maj
and Shogun what they are currently using.

Agreed John- it is very quiet.
From what I recall it gets like this in the northern hemisphere summer, but it seems to get quieter every year.
