Hi all,

I've just upgraded from XP to Windows 7 64bit and very pleased that I did.

I'm seeing big improvements in demanding sims such as ROF, Arma 2 and Railworks to the point where I'm getting good FPS and am able to start turning the settings up.

I run a Gigabyte mobo with E8400 proc, GT440 GPU and 4gb ram. Hardly cutting edge these days! Just wondering what W7 is doing that much better than XP - I suspect a combination of OS improvments and efficiencies. Whatever it is, I'm not complaining.

The only sim I'm not seeing any difference in is the DCS series. I'm blaming my GPU for that one.

Cheers!

I ran a dual-boot of Win7 and XP during the public beta, and I haven't really found one serious complaint with it since. There's the odd quirks and annoyances, but I had those with EVERY Windows ver (except Vista which I skipped completely). Games run smooth(er), haven't had one freeze or lockup due to the OS (only hardware), and it still runs almost just as fast as a fresh install almost two years ago.

I know a lot of people had trouble with drivers at the start (including myself), but once it caught on driver support has been a non-issue (for me at least).

The people that refused to upgrade are missing out on a lot of benefits; but might as well wait for Win8

Windows 8 isnt gonna be an improvement I can tell you that much.

So many things that made Windows7 Great have been completely removed from the Code.

Thanks, guys.

I just checked and XP came out in 2001. That's an age in computer terms.

I wonder when I next change OS? As you can tell I'm not a quick adaptor!

I like Windows 7 -- no complaints at all about the OS (do complain about DRM in Media Center).

I don't like Windows 8. I've installed and removed it twice now (gave it a 2'd chance). Basically, 8 is 7 with a less intuitive, more awkward, ugly interface (for a desktop user).

So, I too might be using 7 a lot longer than I planned (normally I would buy the shiny new OS smile ).

I am a huge fan of Win 7 64 bit.
I was dual booting with XP for a while but I found myself booting XP less and less, particularly as Win 7 seemed to handle my older games collection very well.

I know nothing about Win 8 but judging by what has been said I see no reason to go there.

I will complain about Windows Explorer. No tabbed interface, no readout on folder sizes, and no context sensitive scrolling. All of these can be had with a third party file manager, I use Explorer++. With it I also gain some tools like permanent delete, file destroy, and the ability to split and rejoin files.

Win7 does at least include the option to burn an ISO file if you double click it. But no way to create one. While archiving old home movies to DVD, I need this functionality as a bridge from my set-top DVD recorder to a finalized DVD-R. Ultimately settled on ISORecorder 3.1 to fill this gap.
