Hi.Hope I'm in the right area for this game! Apols if this has been asked loads of times before, but I'm no pc tech. My PC is a core 2 duo, 4GB DDR and 896MB GTX260 graphics. OS is windows 7, home premium 64. I've loaded IL2 1946 on before, but poor sound / joystick response etc - basically a poor load. Should I be able to get this running well on my pc and if so, what's the best procedure / patching etc to achieve this? Hope ok. Thanks for any advice, DoctorW.
(Ps - asking same ? iro EAW in that section as getting poor results there also - want my fix of flight sims!!)

As you can see from my specs below, we have very similar systems. I can assure you that IL-2 runs very well with everything turned up in Perfect mode. I easily run most missions over 100FPS. There must be something seriously wrong with your set up.

Ok sounds good. Did you just load up as normal (ie load dvd and just run install) and patch straight off, or do I need to know any tips / tricks iro UAC / run as administrator etc? Is it best to patch 4.07 - 4.08 - 4.09 rather than the "super patch" (which actually seems to need more skills??) Thanks again and regards,
Andrew.

Make sure to NOT let it install to the default "C/Progam Files(x86)" as it will cause havoc with either Vista or 7. Always use Admin priveledges when installing. Apply patches incrementally and test, then defrag just for giggles in between patches ala FSX. Ensure you are running in OpenGL and set drop downs to perfect. Also, you might want to check out mission4today for a little program called IL-2 Stab. It lets you play around with a lot of the advanced options in the graphics and the game in general.

I used to tout this advice as well, however, I think it's now somewhat illusory if you install the program properly using admin rights and thereafter run it as administator. How do I know? I'm running Vista and installed it to the default location. It runs fine. Even with the Mat Manager addon. The caveat might be if you have mods. Mine is a vanilla install.

I was assuming vanilla, and yes you are right as far as admin goes it will work. My problem is with shadow copies as I run an SSD and the sizes can quickly eat up space. Also OP what was your clock speed on the C2D? I'm sure someone will pipe in here with regards to best vid drivers as latest is not necessarily greatest also, you mentioned audio difficulties...might want to play with the acceleration in the game's options and try different sampling rates.

Prior to install attempt, could I request an idiot guide / step by step of actions to take? + Vanilla install?? - what is this?? (All I know about it is you can get ice cream in this flavour ) Seriously, any help appreciated - fed up with my old fave flight sims being lost to me because of o/s changes. Thanks and regards, DoctorW.

I've just been copying over game installs from the WinXP days. I haven't installed this game in years, just keep copying it. It does not need a proper install as the game does not need registry keys. I have a base copy of 4.07 and I have just kept it alive by copying that and then patching up from 4.07m. I now have about 6 copies of the game on various hard drives and most are different patch levels and they all came form that 4.07 base copy. I have 4.08m, 4.09m, 4.10m, 4.101m, 4.11m, 4.1101m and some mod installs that were put on top of some of those. Heck, maybe I have more like 9 or 10 versions of the game, I've lost count! All started from that 4.07m and just copies of copies after that. They all run flawlessly, no glitches. This game can just be recopied forever.
My desktop can boot into a copy of Win 7 professional or a copy of old Win XP SP3 on a different hard drive. I just load up the bios and tell it what OS to boot into. I don't play Il2 in Windows 7 very often but all of those copies I mentioned will run in Win 7 perfectly. They just run a hair better in Windows XP, so I play mostly in XP. And I never properly 'installed' it in Windows 7. No need to really if you have old hard drives lying around that you put IL2 on years back. Just copy 'em!!
Everybody thinks you have to freshly install Il2 games, you just don't, that is a fallacy. If you have a copy with perfect, uncorrupted files, and you can copy it over somewhere else without the files corrupting, it's as good as a brand new install. Either files are corrupt or they are not. There is no in between, it either black or white, no gray area at all really.
