He hints that that could address the issues the audience is having with the movie.
I don't how they'll explain the central conceit- apparently the Engineers beckon the humans to come and find them, or else at least leave clues to where they might be found- which isn't even their homeworld but some lifeless planet out there where they are storing these incubation chambers. Seems to serve no intelligent purpose. Did they want humans to find their research facility to be wiped out there? Wouldn't have it been better if they just delivered their biological weapons on Earth if they wanted to wipe them out? If that wasn't the intention, then they just wanted humans to visit these alien eggs they had on this remote planet, just for fun. This seems like less one of life's unexplained mysterious, for real life doesn't have a narrator, and more just a problem with a script- it's just that the writers had a dull moment. I had a hard time wrapping my head around that point too. Then a friend of mine pointed me to this link, for a good chuckle: http://enchantedmitten.blogspot.com/2003/12/reading-previous-entries-in-this-series.htmlI still want to know what David really said to the Engineer caretaker when they woke him up.

I still want to know what David really said to the Engineer caretaker when they woke him up. Judging by how the Engineer reacted, David probably said something like "I banged yo mamma last night!!" to him.

Joking aside, I think that might be the final SUCKERS! from the writer to the audience.
Who knows what David said to the Engineer? And he might have been also lying when he told Shaw that the Engineer was going to Earth to destroy it. I think, like a little kid, he could be a manipulative #%&*$# if he wanted to. Maybe he wanted the Engineer dead and a ride to their homeworld (without his body, he needed someone to fly the ship). Yet, we still don't know why.
Only he leaves two cryptic clues.
One was his statement of "sometimes you have to destroy first in order to create", which we think applies to the Engineer's plans, but could as easily be referring to himself.
The other is his fascination with T.E. Lawrence (programming aside), who was torn between two cultures and his sense of loyalty. Does he really wants humans to survive? Does he feel more at home with the Engineers than with humans (that created him "just because they could")?

Brilliant! And I like your analysis about David and his fascination with Lawrence of Arabia. It makes sense to me.

Correcting myself here. David wanted to go back to Earth, but Shaw decided to go to the Engineer's homeworld. I think that is even creepier...

Here's a blog post with some really interesting observations of the symbols and themes contained in the movie, and has pages and pages of intelligent responses, some of which are quite interesting! There are also sprinkled among them, specific quotes from an interview with Ridley Scott: http://cavalorn.livejournal.com/584135.htmlHere's just a teaser from one of hundreds of commenters: Step One: Engineer ship heads to Earth to drop the black goo all over the place.
Step Two: Humans get "infected" and some have sex.
Step Three: Suddenly there are loads of hybrid-goo-babies running around Earth that attach to human faces.
Step Four: a new race of proto-aliens burst through the chests of humanity!
Step Five: The engineers use the newly-bred aliens for who-knows what. bio-weapons. Sooo maybe the engineers who seeded the Earth did so for the sole purpose of breeding Aliens-as-bio-weapons. ("had to destroy (us) in order to create" (alien bio-weapons).

Here's a question:
In Alien, when searching the crashed engineer ship, they discover the exoskeleton/armor of an engineer in that pilot seat (the one in the control room with the star map), and it has evidence of having exploded from within (ie alien bursting out). But in Promethesus, the engineer who sits in that chair aboard the ship that crashes later makes his way to the humans shuttle in order to kill Elizabeth, and meets his end there. So, why would there be evidence of an alien birth explosion out of the exoskeleton in that pilot seat if no engineer birthed an alien there?

My problem with the idea of Jesus as the emissary of the Engineers is that it totally glosses over the message that Jesus brought and that his crucifixion was part of His Father's plan. The death of Jesus was meant for redemption, not to bring our destruction.
