The extended version is a big improvement over the theatrical release. The most radical change is what becomes the host for the alien drone. I think the theatrical release disappointed at the time because audiences were expecting another "Aliens" and not a return to the "Alien" style.

Well, finally saw Prometheus in IMAX 3D last night.

Took a while for my ears to stop ringing afterwards, goodness, they crank those speakers up to 11.

Enjoyed it, good to have a bit of quality hard sci-fi.

General thoughts were story was decent; acting was decent in isolation but I felt no real empathy with the crew as a whole like I did for Skerrit's folks aboard Nostromo.

Part of this was down to the pacing, I guess, jumping straight into the buggies and racing off as soon as the ship was down seemed ridiculous; perhaps there was some implied time lapse but I didn't catch it.

Hard to keep up with all the different varieties of DNA/mutations/xenomorphs.

Great cinematography, CGI and a fine 3D print.

David undoubtedly the most interesting character.

Cheers, Spinner

Incidentally, on a random tack I've just read on IMDB that Carrie Henn (Newt, from Aliens) had never acted in anything before that movie, and never did another acting job after (instead working as a school teacher).

Yup, I was quite shocked when I first discovered that a few years ago and I completely agree with you about David being the most interesting character and also your point about not feeling the same type of connection and empathy to the Prometheus crew compared to the crew in Alien.

I saw it in IMAX 3-D, I thought it was a visually compelling movie, although I could not shake the feeling that this started out as an idea in someone's head completely unrelated to the Aliens franchise, and had the aliens tie-in tacked on to increase its marketing potential.

Actually it is completely the opposite. The original script approved by Scott was a straight Alien prequel with eggs, facehuggers, chestbusters and Xenomorphs.

Then they brought Lindelof to review the script, and he convinced Scott to remove all the direct Alien references and gear it for a series instead of a single movie.

This was no doubt a huge creative risk and a gutsy move by Lindelof and Scott. I admire that.

I definitely think that was an issue. One, the movie would have made somewhat more sense if the alien tech replaced all the squid/starfish/Oil of Olay canisters. And two, if they didn't want it to go that way, starting with the finished(ish) script and tearing things out was surely going to yield the most plot hole laden result.

Oh, and three, if you are going to do two, then you probably shouldn't hire the writer from Lost. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the entertainment value in a TV show where you are always guessing and where today's hero may be tomorrow's villian (or maybe not). But in a limited time format like a movie, or movies, I think you really need to stay on message, because you just don't have time for more than a little convolution without leaving the audience...well...lost.
