If you mean the exe file, the answer is yes.

Thanks for your answer Aviar, how do I overcome this? For some reason I cannot install from the cd - I get a message that the .exe file is mising... from the disc??

Many thanks all, I've just deleted IL 2 and can now reinstall from cd - must be me!! oops

Can I have 2 installs - one on desktop for SAS mod tweaking and 1 in program in a ubisoft file as backup, or will they both clash?

You can have as many installs as you like. The trick is NOT to re-install. Simply make a COPY of the entire IL-2 folder.

What you want to do is keep VANILLA version of IL-2 and never actually use it (except to make copies of it). This way, if you manage your copies correctly, you will never have to actually re-install IL-2 again. Just use a fresh copy and go from there.

The only drawback here is HD space. If you have plenty of space (an inexpensive external HD is a great thing to have), you should always have several copies of IL-2 in various forms (versions) as a back-up.

If you wish to start the game from the desktop, make sure you right click the .exe icon and select "send to desktop", rather than moving the .exe itself.

I have the same problem as B9, just appeared somehow. I tried a fresh load with a cd but that does nothing as well. I do have a copy of the game I saved and can make copies of it but when I try to start that nothing happens as well. Up until this sudden failure to start the game has run faultlessly on Win 7 64 bit. COD runs well!

Make sure you are not running it from "program files". Put the game in some other folder.

I had it saved in programme files but deleted the lot. I have also saved it on my laptop so I can copy that over and start again.

The problem is the cd wont open or self start either and shows the same symptoms. I have one new cd and my older one. I tried a fresh start with the cd but just get the disc symbol spinning for a few seconds then nothing.

1946 comes on DVD, not a CD. Are you sure you have 1946?

My apologies, I meant DVD. I bought the first one when 46 came out and recently bought a new one so I could have a fresh start.
