Damn! Average 9 batteries against the SAC... Hell of a fight!
To shoot down a heavy bomber (in my opinion) it is neccesary to kill all engines from one side or kill the crew, or damage the fuel tanks. That's why recomendations are to use 3 missiles salvo, which they didn't do everytime. Also the old SA-2 missiles warhead radiofuse "Shmel" is not so effective as 5E11 and 5X49 on V-755 and 759 missiles.
Anyway, NVA crews are good, they allmost took SR-71, which Quadafy PVO didn't (even with better version of SA-2). So they did their best.

Today (40 years later), Iranian Air Defense are waiting the USAF and IAF with the same export version of the SA-2, the SA-75MK Dvina (SA-2F) as was used in Vietnam during Linebacker-II...

I don't think that's correct, nor do I think that an SPJ will just deny range. These jammers are usually track-breakers, meaning they will deny range and angles simultaneously. That may not be very effective against S-300 (Since it is PESA, it probably is not as sensitive to side-lobe jamming as some other radars), but there are always other techniques ... some of which we know (range-gate pull-off, jitter) and probably a bunch we do not.



I think it is more like accident. This is not the first time that something like this has happened. F-15E's have been shot down by SA-2's because EW support was removed - the aircraft for some reason, mechanical failure or being chased off by a fighter or other issue - was not on station.

There Iraqies take their high ranked prissoner - Col. David W. Eberly. If I remember it right, some MiG-25 chased the EW aircrafts (EF-111's) and the strike force comes "naked". Mission was a failure, and think another "Eagle" was shot down too.
