Loved the review! You did a great job describing the features and explaining how the annoyances translate into the actual game play. I was part of the testing team for NWAC, and even with my bias IMO you were spot on. I am also of the mind that for $20, you will definitely get your moneys worth out of it. With so few naval warfare titles on the market the entire community seem to hang on every new release. With JanH, one of the developers, being an avid Harpoon fan it must have been quite intimidating to take on a project like this. With the warm reception NWAC has received the future is sure to hold new content in the form of DLC, and new titles that will eventually cover most of the worlds oceans.

Good review, I've had pretty much the same experience. On the NW:AC forum there is a mission editor in the works and a rather robust bunch of navysim fans who are pushing things along. Probably wont be a Harpoon killer (not that it was designed to be) but I think it's a good interim title until Conflict comes out.

Yeah, the strong level of forum participation by the developers is pretty encouraging. It has a ways to go still, of course, but they seem pretty committed to support the project. I expect lots of the kinks will be worked out over the next few months New DLC or titles covering different regions and different navies definitely sound good to me. Glad you liked the review!

It's potentially a great game and that was a fair and helpful review. However, to the "Could be better" list I would have added "A significant number of people have been unable to play the game for more than 10 minutes because of constant freezes. No solution in sight yet"

I'm one of those 'significant number of people'.

As am I. Still stuck at the Ragnarok scenario and awaiting a patch.

Does you guys remember Jane's Fleet Command?
How is Naval War compared to old Fleet Command? I missed the comparison in the review

And thank god there is Paradox Interactive with all their complex Grand Strategy Games! And thank god I discovered Paradox Interactive through Civilization 5 which in my opinion failed hard (thx to the new Firaxis dev who made this possible). Europa Universalis III is my new Civ (stuck in Middleage).

The interface is comparable!...

new to the forum but have been reading SimHQ for quite a while now.

Naval War is 75% off on Steam for 24 h starting now. I belive for 5$/5 euros (in EU) it is worth it.

From Fatty's review:

"To be upfront with it, Naval War is a Steamworks game, which as far as I know means that you must be running Steam to play the game."

So I have to be online and connected to Steam to play it? Is that still the case? I could see this being a great laptop game to take with me on the road..but quite often I don't have internet connections when sitting in FBOs in Podunk, USA...

Still..for $5..can't really complain..

Yes, You need steam running but You can run it in an offline mode and play the game without having internet connection.

What Ariel said, but make sure you set Steam to offline BEFORE you disconnect from the internet.

Yes, you have to be connected in order to disconnect.

I made that mistake when I took my laptop with my Steam games with me on deployment. Ship pulled out, I started up the laptop, selected offline on Steam and was like, "Uh oh..."

It was a long six months after that.

Oh wow..that would suck. Seems that some hacker would have written a trick program to make Steam think it was online for that kind of situation...

...and of course Valve does its best to eliminate those with regular Steam updates. Don't forget how many of these publishers are still DRM-happy like Ubisoft.
