Wow you guys posting about D3 has peaked my interests in this game. So I did some searching and found a huge thread about all the hacking that has been going on. Apparently people are losing a lot of gold and items - when they log in to play their character is naked and they have no gold.

Something else I learned today is the word "authenticator"? A devise or app that can generate a number for you to add another level of security to your WOW/D3 account when logging in.

What are your thoughts? A lot of the community think that Blizzard servers have been compromised and it's not linked to individual hacked accounts.

I made an all new email + battle.net account just for D3. The passwords are all different than anything else I've ever used. This email is used for NOTHING else. I don't fall for all the phishing scams either...

I did this because I couldn't trust that my old blizzard accounts hadn't been compromised in the past. If my stuff gets hacked, than I'd be pretty convinced that Blizzard's $%^# is compromised.

Almost with weekly frequency you hear about a company's database being hacked, so it wouldn't surprise me if Blizzard's is or will be.

I am careful with my accounts. I never follow a link in an email to "log in to my account". I shut down the web browser and then go fresh to the official site.

I also have an authenticator. It cost me $6.50 from the Blizzard site. In *my* opinion it's worth it. Your mileage may vary.

As far as the game, I am having a lot of fun in it and am about 24 hours played right now and at the beginning of Act III on normal. I actually look forward to getting off work at 5 and going home to log in. I haven't been that way about a game in a couple of years.

I and my son have been "hacked" about 5 times. It has always gone back to him logging at friends house, or me having had a virus on there, from my own unscupulous attemps to be unscrupulous. Never since I've had an Authenticator has that happened.

It's not "getting hacked", its a keylogger usually...

Ok. I purchased the game and basically did what HogDriver stated above - whole new email dedicated to D3 with B.Net account and then I went ahead and installed the free authenticator app on my phone.

Cool game so far and if I get hacked now with all this added security oh well. Also, I dont plan on doing any online coop stuff. I hope they do away with the "Always Online/DRM" like what UBiSoft did with Silent Hunter V.

Ok, this game kicks arse and super addictive! I'm playing quick sessions during down time in between qualifying and races.

Ok yeah my char's inventory got ransacked and my PC is as clean as a operating room.

No keyloggers, no viri, no phishing, no nothing. Been doing PC and PC security since I built my own Sinclair 30 years ago.

In my case, I can guarantee the problem is on Blizzard's end. I need no further evidence.

Ticket in to Blizzard support, awaiting my restore. Twenty hours and counting, no response.

Its always the last char you have logged.

My workaround going forward has nothing to do with the authenticators. I make sure I log out after switching to a Hardcore mode mule character. Since these don't share other's stash inventory, and since I never play it, its my perfect "parking" char.

A friend of mine from Youtube got hacked today. Same story, most of his loot gone, but they left a lot in his stash behind. I have no idea if his PC is clean or not, but I very much doubt he falls for fake emails.

I still wonder if Blizzard's database isn't compromised.
