I built my friend a computer with a AMD Phenom II X6 and a GeForce 560Ti 1024GB.
Most settings set to high at an abnormal resolution because of the TV he's running his PC through, and it runs great.
I'd venture a guess your system is a mudhole.
If a game keeps getting updated with new graphical features, it won't run the same as it did when it was first released. Common sense right there.

Wow! that's just awesome, you can build computers for your friends. Define running great? My "mudhole" runs all my games perfectly, except this game. I did not own this game when it was new so I don't know how it ran 3 years ago, but I do know that this game does not even come close to pushing my hardware to it's limits. Nice personal attack though, feel better about yourself?

I'll try Supersampling with 2x AA then. Without it (and all other settings in the OP) my frame rates average in the 40-50s, high 30s if there is a large explosion.
Though without Supersampling the AA does look rather bad to me especially when I am on the ground. Very hard to tell if I am seeing a hill or not which is important when you are landing.
Even if this game is poorly optimized, I would assume something like a GTX670 would increase my frame rates?

I don't know to be honest, I saw a guy on the Rise of flight forums with a GTX 680 who had everything "maxed out" and he said he was getting fps under 60 with SS enabled. http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=29957&start=10 post #12 and post #21, he seems to be happy with it though. Good luck if you decide to get a new graphics card.

Thanks for the reply. So bad AA, horribly optimized, and apparently it resets your control layouts whenever it pleases.
Previously I had my hatch switch on my X52Pro pan my pilot's head around. Worked perfectly. Was playing around in the quick mission editor and decided to play a single mission. Accept now my hatch switch no longer pans my pilot's head around. Instead it zooms in and turns to a fixed position left/right/above/below.
Very annoying. Now I have no idea how to figure out how to fix it.
To top it off, the options menu/control/input area where you select what button does what includes a meta game in itself. Clicking once, or twice, does not do anything. Instead you have to click 6-7 times, in which you will wait for the laggy menu to understand you want to set a new function. Problem is, sometimes it sets it to your mouse clicking... then you must click cancel and restart the meta game all over.
Looks like this game really isn't worth anyone's time if they can not get graphics or input settings to work. To top it off, they break up the community with over priced DLC ($15 for a WWI plane? $20 for a new map? Really?). Luckily I only bought the version of the game with 6-7 planes. I'd hate to throw more money at these developers until they can fix issues with the core game.
Though after spending over an hour playing the menu meta game trying to reset my buttons (with no success yet) I am wondering if I should just uninstall the game now... for all I know the next time I start a mission the game will decide my previous joystick layout is not good enough and change it to their liking.

Poor optimization would have the game pegging your CPU and GPU at high loads without any performance. Just because a game doesn't peg GPU or CPU doesn't mean it isn't pushing it where it can, that actually implies optimization.
For example, ClOD does not push the CPU more than 40% on a single core but pegs the GPU up near 90% and it runs like a bag of crap.

Just saying its funny how I have not experienced any of the random resets to my control layouts & I've been playing for 3 years... It could be you who is the problem. As for the jibe about the new content. How would you recommend the developers put bread on the table? Face the facts the game is 3 years old & they are still supporting it tooth & nail, heck you can even download the game for free.

No need to have a go at the Devs, if you are really struggling, may I suggest heading to the official forums and ask over there for help...posting specs and main issues. Someone will help you out , they are a friendly bunch.
ie, when you set up your controls and settings, export it and give the profile a name, each update has always overwritten the default controls settings. You can then , at any time, import that profile back into the game.
If you are stuck, I can help you on TS3 anytime { Im in Scotland so we would have to work out the times etc }

I used to run ROF on a Core 2 Duo and Nvidia 285, XP32. It ran fine till there was more than 10 aircraft or so on screen, then it was still playable but started to slowdown.
You should be able to max most settings apart from super sampling, trees and possibly shadows. There are plenty of people running ROF on lower spec systems.
