I have the download version of Sturmovik 1946 and several GB worth of mods and patches I collected as of 3 years ago. Sturmovik was installed on my older computer which I still own but is in storage. I simply moved my backup drive to my newer computer and never got around to installing it again.

Now I wouldn't mind getting back into it, especially since I purchased COD which I find almost unplayable and frustrating. I figure that rather than waste time on COD I should re install 1946 and wait until CoD is either dead or patched to a level where playing it will be enjoyable.

Even though my patches and mods are pretty well organized, I forgot what does what and how to install them and configure them. I also just read that there is a new modding system and a new patch. I found another article in this forum dealing with a new installation of Sturmovik, but I sort of lost track of the best way to proceed by the time I read the 4th response. I went ahead and I downloaded the new files and patches mentioned in the post, but then I realized that I didn;t know if I could just apply th latest patches over a fresh install or what I am supposed to do to end up with a good fresh install.

So I am turning to you hoping that someone takes pity on me and could give me a simple bullet list of procedures to get Sturmovik going again from the original installation file.

I hope I am not asking too much and I will appreciate any help you guys can provide.

Thank you.

Only one question: I already downloaded the Superpack, but I just noticed this:

Quote:
"Stock 4.07m to DBW 1.71 SuperPack One

Since I am going to end up with a 4.11.1m (according to the patching guide) I assume it's going to be OK, but just in case, I first apply the patches and then I install the superpack, right?

Stock 4.07m to DBW 1.71 SuperPack One-Stop Download & Install. Includes Direct2Drive Patch, UP3RC4, Latest Selector:(19 parts)

This ultrapack will upgrade from stock version up to 4.10.1 (plus all the enhancements: DBW, UP3...) not 4.11, since is not compatible with the latest patch yet! I've one installation with the latest 4.11.1 and another one with this DBW SuperPack! wink

Darn, I have already installed 411. I really wanted to try this but I don;t really want to manage two installations of ILII.

Unless... by any chance could I avoid duplicating mods and preferences by using Simlinkis? I use them with GTR2 and rFactor and it saves me a lot of disk space (not to mention grief with my controller settings) by using simliks for the location and User_data folders.

Basically with Simlinks you can have as many installations you want and you can share any files that would be identical across installations. With my simracing is a life saver as I have to maintain 6 installations of rFactor and 4 of GTR2. The location folder alone are close to 4GB.

Anyway, unless there is a way to revert to the previous patch, looks like I'll either have to install again or wait for the superpack to get uploaded.

EDIT: Looks like I have hit a snag. I am running Windows 7 64bits and when i first installed ILII it refused to start. Eventually, I set it up with Open GL, run as admin and in XP compatibility and eventually the game started. I then installed the patches, from 409 to 411 (My game is a 408) but when I went to start it again it now thinks about it for a bit but then nothing happens. Just like it did before. I turned off compatibility but still no joy.

I'll keep trying but it may be I ahve to start from scratch again.

Should I have tested the game at each new patch?

I've no problems running on my win7 64 but i've UAC disabled and it is not installed on the default C:/Programs... there are some good threads about 1946 and Win7 here at SimHQ.
Sorry but i don't know nothing about simlinks and IL-2 1946!

BTW, welcome to SimHQ smile

Cheers

Ok, I have IL-2 1946, modded with DBW 1.71 running on Windows 7 x64 without issue.

I have IL-2 installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\IL-2 DBW 1.71

From a vanilla install, if you download the F'n Big Super Pack it should have you set right, assuming you direct it to install at the correct location.

I reinstalled IL 2 1946 last year from a CD. I installed SASs Mods this year but went too far without backing up - I know, sharp intake of breath, my fault. IL 2 became too unstable and the game would go to 15% load then close to desktop.

I deleted IL 2, saved SAS mods to disc and tried to reinstall from CD again, but when the install window appears, the "install" button is not highlighted - although the "play" button is.

Any light to be shone on this enigma? Or is it me?

BTW, I took the IL 2 file out of Programs and set up on my Desktop to allow quicker access - would that affect it?

Many thanks.

If you mean the exe file, the answer is yes.

Thanks for your answer Aviar, how do I overcome this? For some reason I cannot install from the cd - I get a message that the .exe file is mising... from the disc??

Many thanks all, I've just deleted IL 2 and can now reinstall from cd - must be me!! oops

Can I have 2 installs - one on desktop for SAS mod tweaking and 1 in program in a ubisoft file as backup, or will they both clash?

You can have as many installs as you like. The trick is NOT to re-install. Simply make a COPY of the entire IL-2 folder.

What you want to do is keep VANILLA version of IL-2 and never actually use it (except to make copies of it). This way, if you manage your copies correctly, you will never have to actually re-install IL-2 again. Just use a fresh copy and go from there.

The only drawback here is HD space. If you have plenty of space (an inexpensive external HD is a great thing to have), you should always have several copies of IL-2 in various forms (versions) as a back-up.

If you wish to start the game from the desktop, make sure you right click the .exe icon and select "send to desktop", rather than moving the .exe itself.

I have the same problem as B9, just appeared somehow. I tried a fresh load with a cd but that does nothing as well. I do have a copy of the game I saved and can make copies of it but when I try to start that nothing happens as well. Up until this sudden failure to start the game has run faultlessly on Win 7 64 bit. COD runs well!

Make sure you are not running it from "program files". Put the game in some other folder.

I had it saved in programme files but deleted the lot. I have also saved it on my laptop so I can copy that over and start again.

The problem is the cd wont open or self start either and shows the same symptoms. I have one new cd and my older one. I tried a fresh start with the cd but just get the disc symbol spinning for a few seconds then nothing.

1946 comes on DVD, not a CD. Are you sure you have 1946?

My apologies, I meant DVD. I bought the first one when 46 came out and recently bought a new one so I could have a fresh start.

Its easy, go to my computer>right click the D drive (or whatever letter your dvd-rom is ) and open the 1946 disk. You are looking for a program named " A" ( see pic below). Double click it,it will say are you sure you want to uninstall 1946? Dont worry it wont so click yes. After it runs through that it will start to install and give you the option of where to install it. You can install it anywhere you want on your computer. That's the same way you can have multiple installs, you just have to rename the ubisoft folder first. Hope that helps.

Something I noticed when I delete a (IL2 copy-mod) folder, it does not matter if I called it IL2-DBW folder or other. If I delete it, all stock game-folders don't work anymore and I can't use the DVD ether. All mod-folders (Il2-exe) are still working.

strange.

If you are using a Mod Enabler like JSGME, you must switch your game back to stock before removing files or you will corrupt your install.

On second though Bong may have hit it on the head. You should still have a NOCD for a stock game if you were unlucky enough to get a Securom disk like me!
You dont have all these IL2 folders in the ubisoft folder by the way do you?

No, have not. Made a folder on it self. I have NODVD, but it didn't change anything.

I guess that is it. Well no harm done, I installed the Superpack, Histomod, a Squadron Mod, Stock 4.11.1 and Stock 4.7. after I reinstalled the game. And all seems to work now.

But it seems still strange that with deleting a modded folder the stock game wont run but all the other Mod folders work.
