I have always drawn, mainly mechanical things..cars , planes etc. Branched out into some curvier stuff a few years back, female body mainly and some random stuff. Now trying my hand at a bit of arty farty landscape with a tablet and MyPaint , seems like a cool proggie so far. I do not really find photoshop and the like very intuitive for freestyle drawing, maybe its just me smile

Anyway , i have been popping out a few different skies and i am liking that but i am struggling with oceans. Any tips for a digiowater newb. I find i always end up back in my old habit of drawing every single tiny shadow and curve. Doing it like that i will end up with something i am happy with ..but on a 4000*2000 size picture i am going to be here all bloody year smile

one way i attempted it was just a full light watercolorish backwash then fading it black from the top down then highlighted the wave tops , foam etc. Looked ok but..my 9 year old girls one looked far superior biggrin One thing i was also going to look into was also getting a better tablet pen , the one i have (waco bamboo) is too thick and the buttons are in an annoying spot right where my fingers go and i find i am constantly bumping them.

soooo..any tips on sea painting would be handy lol.

My character somehow got all twisted up. I was playing the mission where you have to infiltrate the Golden Glow Estate and do multiple things. When I was out burning beehives and fighting I just eventually ran away to view my success from a distance. I first noticed it when I squated down on a tree trunk. Coot..the squatter../simHQ/2011

I'm not sure what kind of brush tools you've got on hand, it's been a long time since I used MyPaint. In GIMP, I create custom brushes for effects like this, and use the spacing control to vary the interval of repetitive marks. I once painted a field of tall grasses, with a small selection of brushes in a vertical grass blade shape. Varying the spacing, size, and color let me build up the field in multiple layers pretty quickly. A similar method could probably be tuned for water.

I tend to enjoy getting sucked into details. The above method may seem like a huge easy shortcut, but IMO it's on par with using a 2" brush to quickly fill in a field of grass on a real canvas.

After a few years away from digital painting, here's my latest painting in GIMP:

Ok, I found MyPaint on my computer and played with the brush editor. Looks like "Jitter" and "Dabs per second" could be the starting point of something useful and fast. I painted this sample in about 5 seconds using the settings shown in the panels. I had to drag the brush up and down to get a brush mark orientation that looked right.

Adlabs , that is wicked ! I had mucked around a little bit in the brush editor but wasn't having too much joy. What brush were you using as your base ? Love the bike too man , very nice with the cutaway work smile

Thanks!

The first brush I grabbed was "ramon/RS blendOP" from the "Classic/Set 1" group. The icon is labeled "Wet / R-S blend".

Cool ! Just got home and happy as with the result smile I was managing a different style of water with my old school style but by playing with the editor a bit more and some of the different brushes i can see many different ways to do it now.

This was about where i was with it in my last wip on the weekend, i think i have redone the water about 10 times and it was starting to drive me into an iceberg biggrin

cheers again
