Howdy All,

Very new to RoF, so bear with me...
Purchased the RE 8 and was looking forward to snipe a few scouts on our six. No luck so far, can't move the damn machine gun at all.

This is what I usually do :
1. Left Ctrl + C to jump to gunner position. Presto, I'm there, facing my rudder
2. Left Shift + A for level Autopilot. Works fine.
3. T to take control (sometimes repeatedly out of frustration). Can't tell if successful.
4. Left Shift + T to stand up and aim through the gunsight. I'm standing up, that's good.

Moving the gun around with the mouse is no joy.
I can fire with left mouse button, that's about it. I've become real good at shooting my own rudder but I suspect it somehow defeats the whole purpose.
Before anyone asks, my mouse works just fine.

I've got TrackIR running so could this be it? I can look around no problem moving my head while in gunner position.

Can someone throw me a bone?

Cheers,
Slug

You need to remap (or just add a new map) to the shift-T (gunsight). I map mine to Y.

What you are running into is that when you press Shift-t to go to the gunsight the game also thinks you are pressing T to toggle take control so even though you are in the gun sight you cant move. You can fix it in game by just taping T again but honestly you would be better to remap Shift-T to Y.

The gunners in this sim are really complex to use for some reason. I can never remember all the correct buttons and combinations.

Also, remember when you are in the gun sight view the gun can act very squirrely especially if you use a lot of mouse movement. The reason for this is because you dont have direct control over the gun. You are actually moving an invisible aiming point. You can move this aim point in places where the gun can not reach (under the plane for example) and if you do so the gun will freak out and start slewing you to the closest position to that point (directly behind you). So for example you are looking at an enemy on your six and he drops below your tail. You try to aim below but the gun stops so you aim further below not quite grasping the gun has reached it's limits. Then the guns (with you looking down the sight) slams to the far left and aims towards your pilots (if you were holding the fire button while tracking the plane you just shot off your tail, wing and possibly the pilot before you regained control.)

The tail gunner in this game is a joke. It was thrown together when the first 2 seater planes were released and it was done in a hurry. AFAIK they have only fixed minor bugs with it and never gone back to correct the core problems.

I hope one day they will fix it but honestly I dont put much hope in it.

Mind you - I wouldn't use the gunsight view *at all* if it wasn't at least a bit squirrely... IRL, these things would be difficult to move. We aren't simulating fully motorised mounts on a gun-stabilised ground vehicle. Even wind on the human body would have some effect on controllability.

You must disable track ir. It creates a conflict so best disable it unless you disable mouse and use track ir to aim.

Its no a conflict exactly but a bug. When your in ironsights mode TIR seems to be locked in precision mode so moves very slowly. Jason has said in the past that the team are aware of it and its on the list for fixing.

I really wish they'd bite the bullet and re-work the gunner controls. Its not a deal breaker but they could be a lot nicer to use.

I much prefer leaving it to my AI gunner, lot more efficient than I am. And keep control of the aircraft to avoid the bullets coming our way !
