I saw the screenshots of a work in progress. A reskinning of the P-51 that turns it into an F8F Bearcat. Uses the Mustangs' cockpit, of course. While that alone, doesn't interest me , the possibilities have me thinking that I will be purchasing the Mustang. It means that someone will , obviously, be doing an fw190, a BF109, and God knows, what else. They'll be airplanes for Mustang jockeys to fight, very soon I think. I was going to wait until this came down in price, but if I see some bad guys modded, I'm gettin out my forty bucks.

What a departure from the DCS model. It's really odd. I spent last night shooting down Mi-8s with a P-51. Fun yes. But not quite what I expected from the people who pride realism above all else. We argured for years if the Ka50 should get R-73s (as seen in a photo) or a RWS but were shot down because the examples researched for making the game were not so equiped. Now we've got Mustangs dressed as Bearcats?
Well it stands to reason that the Blue Angels would dabble with the Bearcat. Same reason why we see the VRA flying the Hawk, the Thunderbirds the F-16, Patriots the L-39 and so on and so on...........Nothing untoward.
"The Horsemen replaced their normal ride of P-51 Mustangs with F8F Bearcats; one of the first planes flown by the Blues. Recently, past and present merged when the Blue Angel solo pilots flew formation with the Bearcat Horsemen at an air show."

Not untoward. But you know that the 109s will begin soon enough. I bought into the "DCS Standard" when Ka50 was released. Many of us were laughed out of the wardroom when we asked for exceptions to the standard such as a shared laser frequency between the Ka50 and the yet to be released A-10. But that was then. All this is just..again..odd.

I don't understand what you are taking exception to. DCS has always been moddable by 3rd parties in this way. There is nothing new happening.

Nate
I never had a problem with someone dressing up a F-15 as a F-16. That's always been part of Flanker, LOMAC, FC. But I thought DCS was supposed to rise to a different standard. Not one that blocked 3rd party contributions but one that held the battlefield to something plausible. I am enjoying P-51, I really am. But isn't something just a little out of place here? If I posted pictures of a moded A-10 with 6 Aim-54s hung under those fat wings I'd be understandably laughed off the forum. But somehow the P-51, even before its release, operates under a different standard. You guys, Nate, YoYo, EvilBivol, A16; you all taught us to get used to this new attention to detail. You (not you personally, Nate) patiently explained to us why things like heaters and RWRs were never going to happen because this isn't LOMAC, its DCS. Its different. Now I know I'm starting to sound like a little kid who's shocked that Babe Ruth cheats so I'll stop here. (Did I mention that I really like the P-51).
I still don't understand why you think ED should prevent mods to something somebody has bought - surely if they've bought it it is theirs to do with what they will?
No problem at all with what individuals do their own game. Such mods will be required in the short term unless we all want to fly against each other with icons on. I just sense a drift away from the original DCS standard. This seemed like a good thread to bring it up. It wasn't.
....I just sense a drift away from the original DCS standard....
How would you counteract the drift if you yourself admit that blocking of 3rd party content is a non-starter?
More to the point, why are we even having this conversation when ED, apart from DCS: Mig21Bis, has not formally licenced any 3rd party content for release, least of all the Bearcat Mod that you mentioned as corroboration. How can we be drifitng away from a DCS standard when the mods being worked on by members of the public have absolutely nothing to do with the DCS standard/are not affiliated with ED/TFC/DCS in the first instance?
The only way we will be able to judge ED/TFC's intention regarding the standard that they wish to uphold when putting the DCS name to a third-party add-on by granting a licence to a 3rd party developer will be with the Mig release. Until then we'll just have to wait and see.

As I said above, it was inappropriate for me to post to this thread. Sorry to cause the stir.
