G27 here, 270 degrees in the Profiler (my standard openwheel setting), 7.5 lock for the setup....if I move the wheel, the car moves instantly.

For people wondering about times, 39.6-40.00 will be the average qualifying time. In the race, you can get down to the low 39's because of the draft. I looked at my stats yesterday, and I had complete 908 laps here, all done last year.

I should be around tonight, though probably not right at 8. If I'm there I'll be afk while I get my son to bed.

i was getting eaten alive last night in that 20 lapper, dunno why im so down on power, cos i had the indianapolis package installed :/ Looks like for the majority of us European boys (except DB who seems to be pretty darn quick in anything) that there is a big barrier to break through regarding how to actually drive on an oval or in this case a rectangle, compared to the track racing!

I think i have found it hugely and vastly hard to adapt to because i have spent the best part of this week practicing F1's at Barca, and although there seemingly isnt much difference between them, when it actually comes down to racing them it is a HUGE difference, not just in the cars themselves but the techniques required to get a decent lap on these ovals, dunno how much i will practice before this weekend because i don't want to really take my mind away from the F1's which i will be competing in on Sunday, vital i get that spot on as im in a tussle for an overall top 5 in the championship so this is sort of my sidequest for the time being smile

Either way it was fun last night, never raced the Indy cars before as amazing as that sounds! have messed around in them briefly but never raced them properly so the term Rookie was pretty spot on last night wink

It's mostly just technique and being smooth through the corner. You don't lift unless the car is drifting into the wall, on an ideal lap you should be full throttle the whole way.

The line is fairly basic: out against the wall on the straights, down against the line through the corners.

Treat it like a fast sweeper on a road course; angle your corner entry to preserve as much momentum as possible.

lol, thanks Steve. I'm capable of stringing a few quick laps together but can't really compare to Lugnut who has immense speed, unbelievable consistency, and the knack of doing the right things at the right time. You should also keep your eye on Stewart. wink

Make sure you have the engine boost buttons mapped, do the upgrades and grab decent setup. After that, i can only repeat what Lug said really. The idea is to build momentum over a few laps, the way you do this is to get round the circuit with as little controller input as possible - flat to the floor and minimum steering. Keep as low as possible on the way in and as close to the wall as you can on the way out. All the turns should be done in a long sweeping motion and 'swoop' the car round the lap in one continuous motion. Treat the circuit as one continuous corner and work on finding a rhythm and keeping smooth. Every time you correct an input you are losing time.

It's the same when racing too, everything you do has a time cost, so you need to be decisive. Mistiming an action might only cost a tenth but that can be enough to break the tow and spit you out of the pack. It's about doing everything just at the right time.

In road racing, the odd mistake often doesn't matter. In oval racing it's the difference between first and last.

Oh, you have the ability, don't try to fool anyone. neaner

Doing the right thing at the right time, though - glad you mentioned that.

I'll need to dig through my replays to see if it saved but in one of the practice races the other night, we had a restart with only one lap left to run in the race. I was in last, got a good restart...actually a fantastic restart...and I was in the lead before we were halfway down the back straight.

Running fast laps at an oval comes quick if you know what you're doing, but the knowledge of what to do with the car when you're no longer the only one on the track can only come with experience.

Whew! I just ran 101 laps on the server tonight in race trim. Personal observations:

I can run around 13-14 laps before I need a pit.

My first pit I opted to keep my old tires. They were fine until about 2/3rds of the way through my next run. The last few laps before I needed to pit again my RIGHT front was getting slippery and I brushed the wall after T3 a couple times. After that I always took tires.

After 3 or 4 pit stops I had to tell the crew to put gas in the car. My pit window showed no gas so I had to adjust it to full fuel. I didn't catch it the first time and left the pits with 4L in my tank. Made it to T3 before I ran out and coasted in to the pits.

I made it a point to request a pit stop with around 12L left in the tank. For me this is usually around the S/F line so I have plenty of time on the back straight to make any pit adjustments before I come in.

When I come in for a pit I let off just after T4 and start braking gently and downshifting. When I downshift to 3rd I hit the pit speed limiter and it gets me slowed up just as I cross pit entrance.

If you run out of gas and coast in to the pits...if you make it to your box and get gas, you'll need to make sure you have ignition mapped. They'll restart your car in the pit box...but only in the pit box.

Fresh tires take time to heat back up...about a lap and a half to two laps. Coming out of the pits after service you can't dive into your turns like you were before the stop because you'll slide the back end...and if not careful it will come around.

My fastest lap was .40:030 and my average was around .40:225 (all alone on the server, so no draft).

Edit Reason: can't remember my left front from my right front...doh!
