And if I understand you correctly, I cannot plug in an HDMI and two DVIs since the HDMI and one DVI share a clock... but they don't both run at the same clock speed, correct?
If the two DP does not need independent clocks, can I then run 2 DPs and two DVIs = 4 monitors? Just to confirm what Fearless said...
Also, I have an old PCI-E card sitting about somewhere... is it possible to plug that one in my PC and use that to drive one or two more monitors? Just for showing PDF files or Teamspeak windows or some such, not real workload on it, but will two video cards (not crossfired!) of different types (both ATI though!) work nicely in one PC? you can run 2 DP and 2 DVI no problems, as the DPs dont use the 2 Independent Display clocks, Set a 3 Screen wide Eyefinity and leave the 4th screen as an extended desktop to leave whatever open on.

99% of graphics cards only come with two clock generators.
One clock generator is required per video stream for HDMI, DVI, and VGA ports. So, the maximum number of displays supported showing different video streams is 2.
Displayport does not need a clock generator, which is why AMD chose Displayport as a way to get the third monitor,
Unlike nVidia, which requires two cards in SLI.
Cards with Displayport 1.2 can output 3 video streams per displayport output, which gives the regular 68xx, 69xx, and 79xx cards the ability to support 6 monitors with 2 displayport connections.
However, this requires one of two things: Monitors that support daisy-chaining of displayport, or a displayport MST hub.
Because of this, stock 68xx, 69xx, and 79xx will only support 4 monitors. 2 by HDMI/DVI, and 2 by Displayport.

Thanks for confirming 4 monitors! Cards with Displayport 1.2 can output 3 video streams per displayport output, which gives the regular 68xx, 69xx, and 79xx cards the ability to support 6 monitors with 2 displayport connections.

How do I know if any monitor supports daisy-chaining? And is that MST hub the one that "is not out yet" but might be by this summer? Also, what about me adding a second card on my PC to drive more monitors? Possible?

DisplayPort1.2 MST hubs arent out yet, I was told by someone inside AMD "sometime this summer".
there is only one monitor that i've seen that does the daisy chaining, and its a Apple screen.
(sorry meant to include that info in my last post, but it was deleted somehow when i hit submit button.)
there are low Res DP1.1 Hubs, but they are $100+ for max 3000 horizonal Res. (dell has them in stock i think)

as long as you dont plan to make an Eyefinity Array with them, and play games on it, you should be able to. i know people that drive their Eyefinity Displays off their Discrete card, and a 4th non priority screen off their onboard GPU/HDMI. I dont know how they set that up though.

Ooooo... more research to do then!!
No, the top 3 monitors would possibly be an Eyefinity group, but the lower two monitors don't need to be.

should be as easy as adding a 2nd GPU but NOT putting them in XFire mode.
they should both be the same General type to avoid conflicting drivers(AMD 5000, AMD 6000, AMD 7000, Geforce 400, 500 or 600), dont mix brands.

Lol yeah, wouldn't think of X-firing them as I was told the faster GPU will throttle down to the slower one.
However, one is a 6970 and the other is a 5770.... maybe I'm better off using my on-board GPU?

However, one is a 6970 and the other is a 5770.... maybe I'm better off using my on-board GPU? 5770 will stomp any onboard GPU you should be able to run them side by side, 5000-7000 series are all included in each driver (i think 4000 series and below dropped to quarterly updates from monthly, allowing AMD to work on getting the newer cards drivers more stable/faster.) just make sure when you start playing games that you choose the right display adapter, i think when i ran my 8800GTS and a 2nd adapter, I had the option in some games to choose which adapter i want to render. but if your only using it for Internet/PDF display and not for anything 3d acceleration, You can try the onboard GPU, most mainboards disable them if a Discrete card is detected though. Using onboard would save your power consumption and heat vs using a 5770 for driving information/desktop only screens.

Thanks for that, Skate. Anything I should keep in mind when installing the 5770 back in? I don't want to have an oops! moment and fry my 6970/5770/motherboard. My PSU is a Corsair 850W so that should be able to handle it, right?
