Is it bad when, upon reading this, I thought "Hey, I thought it was the fifth today???" and had to look at the calendar?

Ding! Ding! You win a prize. smile

And this little excerpt about Shingle (Anzio) shows why you should never mix politics and personal egos with battlefield decisions,

"The Allies finally broke out in May but instead of striking inland to cut lines of communication of the German Tenth Army's units at Cassino, Truscott on Clark's orders reluctantly turned his forces north-west towards the prize of Rome which was captured on 4 June. As a result, the forces of the German Tenth Army at Cassino were able to withdraw and rejoin the rest of Kesselring's forces north of Rome, regroup and make a fighting withdrawal to his next major prepared defensive position on the Gothic Line."

They even wrote a song about it:

It was just before dawn
One miserable morning in black 'forty four.
When the forward commander
Was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn.
And the Generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held back
The enemy tanks for a while.
And the Anzio bridgehead
Was held for the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives.

And kind old King George
Sent Mother a note
When he heard that father was gone.
It was, I recall,
In the form of a scroll,
With gold leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
His Majesty signed
With his own rubber stamp.

It was dark all around.
There was frost in the ground
When the tigers broke free.
And no one survived
From the Royal Fusiliers Company Z.
They were all left behind,
Most of them dead,
The rest of them dying.
And that's how the High Command
Took my daddy from me.

Yup, that's a great song by Pink Floyd. Quite poignant.

I asked myself, "what is the most mind-numbing, pedestrian job conceivable" and three answers came to mind: a toll booth employees, an Apple store "genius", and what Penny does. Because I don't like touch other peoples' coins and I refuse to contribute to the devaluation of the word genius, here I am.

The toll booth worker is quickly becoming extinct in Florida. The highways in my county now only have automated toll lanes.

Zack: You know, I saw this great thing on the Discovery Channel. Turns out if you kill a starfish it'll just come back to life.

Sheldon: Was the starfish wearing boxer shorts? Because you might have been watching Nickelodeon.

I would like to use my last word (lol) to express how glad I am that Tom is back on board. No offense to Jessies or Numpties from around the traps, it's just that I feel better with 20 mike mike in "town."
