I thought both character deaths in "Serenity" were written very convincingly and they both fit in well with the overall saga of Firefly. Besides, I'm pretty sure Joss knew the film would be the final thing ever made for Firefly so he could go ahead and close all story threads.
I can tell you right now which is the absolute lamest and worst written death in the history of science fiction and that would be,

They just turned up and there he was.
They may as well have discovered he'd slipped on the bath mat getting out of the shower, and broken his neck in Serenity.

The truth is, Ron Glass didn't like doing the series. The rumor was that the only way he would be in the movie was if they would kill his character off. I have heard from more than one place that even while the series was being filmed, that he planned on leaving as soon as his contract was up.
if he disliked it, he knows how to put on a good actor face. Considering the videos from conventions where he's been talking about Firefly/Serenity with the other cast members.
Interesting info Destructis. I had never read anything about that before concerning Ron Glass.
Yeah, he sure didn't give that impression in the series bonus features. Of course, he could have been told "you WILL say good things about how you really enjoyed it, Glass" and did just that.

I really doubt this. If it's true, he's lying his ass off on all the special feature material.

Same here. Besides, unless that information/rumor came from someone who actually worked on the production of the show, that info is almost certainly bogus.

Joss Whedon revealed that the reason Wash and Book were killed off in the movie was because Alan Tudyk and Ron Glass could not commit to sequels. Universal Pictures wanted all the main actors who would appear in the sequels to be contractually available, meaning Whedon had to find a way of getting Tudyk and Glass out of the story. (In his original script, before he knew they couldn't commit, all members of the crew survived, with Zoe and Wash promising to have children together.) Despite this Whedon has also revealed that there was a "strong possibility" that Wash and Book would return if a sequel ever was made -- indicating that he had plans to find a way to bring them back
